How many hacks?

Fuck the hacks. Acting like just being “better” will end the bull shit is ridiculous. Slander and fight them as much as you can. Whatever everyone is trying to keep them controlled is not working. Call OSHA, report illegitimate businesses, and stop at their sites to promote your cause. No one is going to help you with it. Not that I’m a tree hugger but if you don’t think you have to cause your business will not suffer then do it for the trees. I’m tired of being thought of as a “tree cutter” or “Tree guy”. Fight for the word arborist. Shit, plumber sounds better than toilet guy.

Wow. Apparently a man doesn’t have the right to try and earn a living if he doesn’t live up to your very high standards, or operate in a way that you find acceptable. Slander them! Fight them! Report them! Harass them at their job site.

As a life-long hack, a well known delinquent/degenerate, and someone who may or may not be convicted felon, I would strongly advise against taking any of those actions. Gawd knows who your gonna piss off? Someone might go hack-shit crazy on ya?

As was already said, handle your biz and let your work and your clients speak for you. If you are good at what you do there should be no need to attack or slander the lowly neighborhood hack.

Maybe a little over the top but the message is not what your making it.

Yea my bad. Industry is doing great! There are no liars just trying to scare people to make money. Everyone’s following all the rules and staying safe! It’s so exciting to work with felons and degenerates. Thanks Rico, enlightening stuff

Your quite welcome Jem!

I'm trying to remember the last time I saw OSHA bother with self-employed people with fewer than 10 employees. Hmm. I think it was back in nineteen-seventy-that-shit-never-happened or thereabouts. Around here, you're about as likely to see an OSHA guy as you are a penguin... unless you're at one of the big, corporate industry sites. Just sayin'... I've never met a small business owner who gave a rat's ass about OSHA or worried about them showing up on one of their jobs.

OSHA’s more worried everybody finding out that they don’t have anywhere close to the amount of personnel they need than anyone running a shitty tree biz is that OSHA will show up at a job site

Personally my definition of a hack is more literal. Con artist type who does shitty work, false claims of hazards, gouging Unsuspecting people, and well doing a shitty job. I’ve seen it from both ISA arbs and fly by nights. Unfortunately many times PPE is fixated on as it’s the only leg to stand on when reporting. I feel that PPE is somewhat a personal choice, granted I make my employees wear it, and I make the choice to do so as well.

Around here there is one ISA arborist who is top dollar. He is great at making a tree look pretty, and not leaving a flake of sawdust on the ground. However in my eyes the work is needless as the tree should be reduced instead of crown cleaned. Then another company which flies the ISA logo (owners son is, but only does reports etc) actively guts trees to the point they are imminent hazards gets paid and goes on to the next.

They are hacks in my book, I generally don’t give a shit as long as the work is good, moderate, or excellent. What gets me riled up is people taking advantage of my neighbors, friends, community, and doing shit work on the trees

Yeah his penguin army lost interest and went AWOL from the compound. Amazing how well they've naturalized.

@rico if you saw what some of the dumb@#s do and are doing around here you’d wanna drive em over with your skidder then back up and do it again to knock some sense into em! They’d be still trying to start their wild things when you’d be on your 3rd redwood. In all seriousness the skill level is well below the horrid level if you were to witness it. They’d never make it out there with their 50’ ladders! :baaa:

Shades of Pablo Escobar's renegade Hippo army...

A lifelong pursuit of hackerry has put shoes on my children and Cheerios in the cupboard! As an ISA Certified Hack, I take great pride in my hackmanship. Our Prime Minister refers to it as "hackspersonship"; he being more savvy on costume parties and SJW monoculture.

I watched a hilarious crane removal last year. Major intersection, biggest construction project in town, southern live oak crane removal with part of the canopy over the road. Big 50 year-old chunky bear of a guy on a Blake's rope-only Ddrt, packing a massive Husky with ~24" bar. No helmet, just a comm headset. At a cool 45 ft. above ground, he completely disconnected, climbed 12 feet up, scooted another 10 feet out on a big limb, sat down, sawed off the branch and let it fly to dirt, then re-attached to the ball. The funniest part is that he was obviously within his abilities the whole time and his monkey move definitely sped up the workflow. But seriously, that's where OSHA looks - big sites like that. What's the fine if he's caught, you know? I just ate my lunch and enjoyed the show.

I get it Deevo. I had to go to town today which is about a 4 hour round trip and got to witness some world class, gawd awful tree work. Topping 5-6 beautiful Coastal Live Oaks. Done by a big, rebuttable outfit. Someone butchered an amazing clump of Monterey Cypress so the home owner could see the ocean. Another fool limbed up a grove of 170ft Redwoods to 120 ft. No shit! The sad part is that the clients were most likely quite happy with the work.

No matter what line of work we’re talking about, there will always be hacks. That just the way it is. They do have the right to exist, and make a living like the rest of us. It is up to those who know better to do their best on every job, and educate as many as they can about what good tree work looks like.

Thanks JD. I feel a little better knowing the penguins are not native to Nebraska. Seeing as penguins are a very invasive, aggressive species I imagine they were the ones responsible for killing all the Panda Bears in Nebraska?

Is there anyone who is pro-hackery willing to accept the same hackery work from their dentist...accountant...airline pilot?

The thought gives me chills!
Reminds me of my first float-plane ride into a logging camp in AK. The pilot couldn’t have been more than 16 yrs old, and drove like he wanted to die. Aw the good old days.
