How do YOU know about Arborists & Arboriculture?

I've read MANY articles where there is a link or sidebar directing homeowners/consumers to the ISA site to get more information about proper treework.

The beginning of my change from Evil Tom to the arborist I am today came from reading Arbor Age and TCI magazine. After reading many derisive comments about people who spiked and topped I said to myself that I didn't want to be included in with "those" people. After attending Arbor Expo in '86 I learned that there were some real professionals out there. People that I wanted to be associated with but I didn't know about in Minneapolis at the time. Now I know many very good arbos in MN and around the world.

With the Internet availability for consumers I've found many people who ask questions that they've found by doing a bit of research.

Do you understand how much money from certification goes back to the chapeters and doesn't stay in Illinois?

Uhhhh, no. Kinda an odd question tho. Am I supposed to be thinking about that?
I assume that Cert. monies are dispersed according to the operating needs of the organization. In fact I once asked for and got the budget for the ISA. Seemed to be very clear to me. I am not an accountant but I sure did'nt see excessive spending being done.

what I AM concerned with Tom, is the 'watering down' of the Arborist Cert. and the efficacy of the Master Arborist cert. AND last but not least, GETTING THE WORD OUT to the average homeowner.
Soooo, your question begs (in my mind) further explanation, please

Frans

Agreed, the process is pretty thin.

I'd like to see more articles written with the ISA in the lead rather than the shadows or sidelines [-bars]. The word does get out in a fashion.

I've never looked at the ISA budget. There is a formula for sending a pretty high percentage of the certification budget back to the chapters. There are expenses to keep track of the CEUs and other parts of the program. Does it seem like I'm an apologist for the lackings of the CA program? If I had any more of a say there would have been more than one decertification by now.

Why is the ISA membership fee cheeper than the TCIA membership fee? We get our credentials from the ISA. I would think they would be charging more for memberships.(Don't let them know I suggested that) TCIA gets us a nice magazine every month, a C.D. loaded with business info, and a membership directory.--Okay.--I guess.

That was just a segway to the topic: How do YOU know about Arborists & Arboriculture?

I would like to see more marketing done by the ISA and TCIA for us arborists. This might be radical, but needs to be done; regional commercials. Something like... illustrating professionalism. It only takes seconds for a picture to burn into your mind and understand what is real arboriculture. It can take a humorous and serious approach. I can just picture a "hack" with no PPE, topping a tree, and climbing without rope. Then a quick contrast with some /forum/images/graemlins/pbj.gifkick ass climber jumping, swinging, and flying around a tree. Quick vantage points showing how cuts should be made, how large limbs are rigged...(fill in your imagination). It could be relitively cheap on some of the local channels.

What do you guys think? And don't say it would take more money. That is obious. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

alves and guy apparently dont dig my wondering if this quality article is from the hippy choking/ stomping ox, i want to know...and yeah at some point he may be forgiven for his past...
but have you seen the video taken by the forrest defenders? it sure helped sway my opinion.... and maybe it is old news ,
go look at whats left of the freshwater area he helped remove protesters from and see whats left.. if youd been there previously youd be bummed too.
our industry is about integrity and while i agree he has a wonderful thread going here,,, i'm jusst a little disgusted because it seems like a major contradiction to talk about defending trees when we we all know about his previous exploits.....so im bitter...go walk whats left of the area and judge for yourself before you judge my thoughts....a certified arborist shouldnt condone raping the enviroment...and bring disgrace to the arborists working in that area i took so much heat because of his actions its not even funny..i ll get off my soapbox now

That and videos is a great way for the word to get out. but who will pick up the pen or the camera? The guys in the field, if it is to be done effectively.

Political action also gets the word out, good and bad. If you disagree with what a CA has done to the industry's image, what else can you do but to do something good, and highlight it? Bashing is pointless. Pick up a pen or camera and report good work FOR the trees and people.

If you want compensation for watever you submit and is used and you can't get money, barter for pubs and products.

I would urge ANY person to base their opinions not on a single (extremly) biased viewpoint, but on a fair and impartial overview of ALL the facts relating to a situation. And if all the facts are not available then to withhold our final judgment.

Sound familiar? That is because in our (America) system of justice is based on just that, a fair and impartial system of checks and balances within our courts. If we particpate in mob rule we return to the dark ages.

'thattreeguy', I dont see where you live because you have omitted that information from your profile but what has happened is a whole lot of people who know next to nothing of the situation in the North woods have all chimed in with their opinions. Mostly based on 'rank' opinions harvested from what is essentially a well developed program of slander and misinformation put forth by the protestors.
Even the most fanactical person will agree that their IS ALWAYS two sides to a story.

And you know what they say: 'Everyone has an opinion, and they all stink'.

I will also say that I am very aware of the 'courts' being supportive of corporations to the exclusion of our natural resources (and most everything else for that matter). We as a society are responsible for that being a reality today, each and everyone of us individually.

frans...i am from fortuna ca in humboldt, owner of that tree guy..one of two certified arborists for the whole county that serves the private sector, i am temporarily in az due to pl closing 2 large mills and 1 private mill going under, the economy is slowly dying up there because they can do 1/3rd of their planneed harvest for the year, and my clients are supported directly/indirectly by the mill.
..... i dont know if i can get a copy of the video to send out or if that would be ethical...but my only point that was bugging me is the thread ox put out was great but it just sounds hipocritical coming from him. thats all
..... i was right there watching him and eric schatz pull kids down from trees(as a neutral observer..i was rooting for the fallers for awhile), and some of their actions were unsafe, especially the scuffle that took place where off the edge of the screen you see him jump on this kids back and repeatedly put him in a choke hold bad enough to where eric has to repeatedly ask him to let go of his throat and let him breathe.....he may be a talented climber and arborist but those actions that took place up there for almost 2 weeks were just way too dangerous.and in turn i lost my respect for him....my point...hipocritical..thats all..not to take away from the article just the author..
...after all if i brought some sort of shame on the industry y'all would jump me for it too.

Frans since you are participating in the derailment of your own thread I need to chime in. You said: " what is essentially a well developed program of slander and misinformation put forth by the protestors."

Considering the amount of effort that goes into presenting the business' point of view in the most favorable light possible, this statement seems strange.

ttg, if you did mess up like that and then tried to do something good later, would you want to have your past dragged into it?

Now both you boys be good and get back to your work!~

thattreeguy,
My hat is off to you. Just kinda tired of hearing folks talk about this stuff without having any firsthand knowledge of the situation.
I am not defending Ox, I just dont like the random slandering that goes on in this topic of the treesitters.

Sorry guy, you lost me here.

" what is essentially a well developed program of slander and misinformation put forth by the protestors."

After viewing the video put forth by the sitters, I was left with the feeling that what they presented was not accurate.

Thanks for reminding me to try to stay on topic! I'll try...

That video is linked-to at least a couple of times here already.

Based upon it, I'm of the opinion Ox is an okay guy. That kid (impossibly, if true) screaming loudly that he's being choked was too much for me and I feel he brought it all on himself, whatever it was that actually happened. Both sides of the fight are both right and wrong near as I can tell.

Too complicated for my blood, generally the world is very reminicent of water spiralling down the drain of a toilet. I enjoy my ancient history, and sometimes I wonder if the spiral is similar to that of the Roman Empire as it convulsed into it's death throws, opening the door to the Dark Ages.

How's THAT for pessimism?

Here's one way homeowners learn about arborists. Unfortunately there are a few companies out there that shouldn't be.

I took this pic in our neighborhood last week. A company started out doing storm cleanup and now have gotten referrals all over the block. This particular homeowner is a major tree hugger (won't even throw away a foot long piece of 2x4) and wanted something/anything done to cover this very old injury. Guess he's happy and doesn't care that they are using spurs on his oaks. Lots of spray painting going on as well.

His next door neighbor claims to have improved TV reception.
