So my son's Toyota 4Runner failed its smog test for the first time since 98.
In an effort to save money he comes to the old man asking advice.
I look at the smog test computer test results and all the critical emissions results are just fine. It just read, This vehicle failed the MIL/Check Engine Light due to a warning lamp failure. Fault Codes: P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)
So I hopped onto the net, googled fault code P0171 and presto!
MAF sensor failure! Mass Air Flow Sensor, tells the on board computer how much fuel to inject on fuel injected vehicles. Located just outside the air box on the tube leading to the fuel injection system.
Unclip wiring harness, remove two screws, slide sensor unit out, place in ziplock sandwich bag, add rubbing alcohol, zip shut and shake!
Remove sensor and allow to dry thoroughly. Reinstall. Remove negative battery terminal for 90 seconds to reset computer. And bye bye check engine light.
Such a simple procedure to fix a vexing problem that a mechanic would have charged who knows how much for? Fixed for zero dollars courtesy of the Internet.
Makes the old man appear deceptively knowledgeable and wise!
