How are you all doing?

I don’t know about other parts of the country but the tree business in New Jersey has been at an all time high since spring! I talked to Vermeer salesman yeasterday about a mini skid, he said he has 20 units coming in and all are sold. He said if I signed up for one today it would likely be 2 months before I got it. He said in 35 years he’S never seen anything like it.
Go figure

We are in the same place, more work than we have ever seen. Mulch yards are not taking chips, we can’t give away firewood, and hiring more staff? Good luck!

It’s soooo weird given the circumstances
The way I see it, our clientele has not been greatly hurt financially, most are unaffected that way. And now that everyone is working from home, not traveling, not eating out or going to the movies, they have more to spend and their home during the day to see what needs done, so they’re spending on home improvements.

Construction companies around here are all booked twice as far as usual, landscapers are crazy too, but half the lawn guys are sitting around bored since everyone is home and cutting their own grass now.

I don’t know maybe it’s me. I personally chose to take on a reduced work load since COVID started and mainly do what I needed to get by. Not that there isn’t work, just what I personally chose to do with what I felt comfortable with.

That sounds like the right choice to me. Take on as much work as you are comfortable with, and no more. Some people are quite happy working a couple days a week, and there are those of us who are driven to push to do more each month than the month before.

One of my best friends used to own one of the largest landscape companies in the area, he had 50 mowers running full-time, a landscape installation division, and an excavation division. Now, he and his brother work with one or two part-time helpers, he lives in a tiny house with two pet pigs, and he’s happier than he has ever been before.

No one but you can decide how much work you should be doing, or what kind of work you should be doing. And your happiness is much more of a measure of success than your bank account balance.

One of my reasons for cutting back is simply because I don’t want to risk dealing with people who don’t take precautions. It’s not worth it to me.

Under normal circumstances I enjoy working more and being real busy. Increasing my workload, etc. I find I am happier when I’m busier. But in this situation I’m making decisions based mainly on safety considerations.

Often times I don’t answer the phone I purposely let it go to my voicemail because in my voicemail I outline the precautions I’m taking and if someone leaves a voicemail then it usually tells me they’re serious about working with me and respect my precautions if they don’t leave a voicemail then that tells me maybe they don’t want to be bothered with precautions and in that case I don’t even want to work with them.
