hort oil sprays

I have been getting spraying hemlock hedges with hort oil jobs lately. Thought I had them all rapped up several weeks ago but got more calls.

I am concerned about night time temps getting around 32 degrees. Most labels say dont apply if temps are predicted to fall below 32 within 24 hours.

How critical is this? Has anyone seen freeze burn after an oil app?

I sprayed some big hedges yesterday in the am, day temp got up to 70, but this morning it was down to 32. I always worry about stuff like this.

I am under the impression (through reading and experience) that as long as the water mixed with the oil has enough time to dry during the day, there will likely not be any damage at night.

We have this problem in the spring where nighttime temps can still be below freezing (that's below 0c in canadian) even up to a couple of days before bud break.

I've heard of some people spraying in late winter and not having troubles, although i doubt the efficacy of that timing on pest control.

Thats kinda what I was hoping to hear. Hopefully it works out with no problems.

There are so many hemlock hedges here and many several companies are selling annual merit soil injection. I have converted a dozen or so customers to letting me do annual oil sprays. Get all 3 of the bastids, adelgid, scale and spider mites + its a fraction of the cost. Been seeing outbreaks of the indian wax scale this year on hemlocks.

Thanks Nuthin!

there is a "reputable" lawn service here that sells annual merit soil injections like mad. Several hedge owners told me they signed contracts for over $1000/year to soil inject merit.

You should see the spider mite damage! Pale and looks like shizz.

Since converting to oils you can see the old pale foliage and the dark green new growth foliage.

But it seems to take several years of oil treatments to get them really looking good.

Hey guys,
Any site suggestions or books you could recommend on Hort sprays? I'd like to add this to my services but want to gain more knowledge before applying. Last season I came across a few case of various fungas and serpintine leaf miner. I was able to deal with it by pruning it out with good results and happy clients.

Any direction would be great.

Thanks
