Honl Tree Care, Portland, Oregon

RyanCafferky

Been here a while
I am an independent contract climber based out of Hood River Oregon. I work all over and for many different companies but for the last 6 years I've contract climbed for Honl Tree Care more than for any other company. They are currently looking for more help. Climbers, ground crew, office help, and sales team members are encouraged to apply.

Honl Tree Care has rapidly grown in the Portland area through the recession and now during this period of economic growth. This is for many reasons but #1 is Chad Honl and his connections to the community, his commitment to quality work and customer service, and his commitment to his employees. His attitude and how Chad has consistently treated his customers and everything he tries to do for the community is why I have given so much of my time and energy to his company and I will continue to do so as my schedule allows.

Reasons I think Honl Tree Care is a great place to work.

1. Safe work environment. Safety is always placed above production. PPE use is not only encouraged but is mandatory.

2. Fun work environment.
I genuinely like and enjoy spending time with each and every member of the Honl Tree Care team. The crew is a diverse collection of folks with varying backgrounds of education and experience but they all have love for the work and affinity for one another.

3. Quality work
The quality of the work we get to do is really great. I never feel rushed to do something half way or leave something I'm not proud to put my name on even if the job is not super profitable. Chad always encourages proper tree care and is open to more progressive ideas.

4. Employees are well taken care of.
While the company has continuously grown, Chad has consistently paid his crew above average wages, and is now offering vacation, sick leave (which is mandatory in Portland), a retirement package, and health benefits. Numerous employees have also been students part time and their schedules are accommodated. The attitude is never "how little can I give the employees", but instead "how much can we give".

5. Customers are taken care of.
If disagreements or discontent with the work arise, the attitude is "what can we do to make you feel good about this." Prices are adjusted lower if the work proceeds quickly, and the crew goes above and beyond regularly.

If you have never been to Portland but have thought of moving there, I will tell you that as an arborist it is a heavenly place to work. The tree species diversity is unmatched, the size that trees attain is mind boggling, and the community for the most part values its trees and tree care as a profession. I live over an hour from Portland but I drive in to work there because of the challenges that present themselves there, the species diversity, and because I like working with the tree service crews there. Especially the Honl Tree Care team.

Kind words Ryan! Quite a write up.
I am one of the crew leaders at Honl, will have been there 2 years next month. I have nothing to add, other than that as a perk we get to work with and learn from Ryan twice a week, sometimes more.
Ahh don't forget quarterly-ish safety training days (paid).
