Home made friction saver

you can actually do a locking brummel on both ends, w/o distorting the braid or compromising the gear in any way. if i'm remembering correctly buckingham used this solution on the bridge of the original model of the glide - splice eyes just long enough that you can girth hitch them to the rings (or just the 2nd ring) and then stitch/whip so the girth hitch can't come undone. i did that on a removable redirect i spliced last year. worked fine.

Good point Kathy. It didn't even occur to me to girth hitch the ring.

but we can't be friends anymore since I hate to be corrected.

so the cover has to crossover the cover in the cover?would that maintain the girth of the 1/2" rope, when useing an adjuster on the saver?

If you taper evenly on both sides, yes. Measure your taper cuts instead of just whacking them off at an angle.

You can only do a Locking Brummel on one side. The other side you can do a stitched Brummel. I am considering trying the biner so you can do a locking on both side.

[/ QUOTE ] This splice technique allows you to put a locking brummel on both ends. Of course, then you have to use a carabiner or other openable ring on one side.

anyone have pictures of thier friction saver? And does everyone use adjustable? I'm not at the splicing stage of things so its hard for me to get things spliced to fit exact dimensions. I can use double fisherman knots and that should work? Does the knot seem to get hung up when setting it from the ground?

Here's the one I made last night. 1/2" Tenex. It's about as short as it can be with the bury (2 fids). After the brummels I bury just as doing a normal eye splice-for the lack of knowledge on how short I can go. Anybody know?

is it possable to do a normal eye splice for a 16 strand samson when makeing a saver or are there complications to this pratice? i tried to splice a saver today and failed misserably i barely got the thing to lock brummel then icould not figure the taper so i threw away about 8'mof rope anybody have instructoins maybe?

any climbing line has worked well for me, I seem to have a lot of excess 16 strand so thats what I've been using. Here is one I just finished

my first homemade friction saver was made out of a cheap stitched dyneema 1/2" sling. I girth hitched a small ring to one end... slipped some webbing over the middle and girth hitched a carabiner to the other side(also experimented with the roller carabiner paired w/locking biner on this side). Slings are cheap that you could have two sizes and swap the hardwre when needed.
My current saver is goldstreak sliced for a biner on one end and a small ring on a sliding HRC friction hitch for the other.
For a non-spliced saver I might suggest some 8mm cord tied in a loop w/fishermans and fashioned like my stitched sling above leaving the knot on the small ring side.
These work well for me but honestly, for day to day climbing I use the Sherrill leather sheath more than half the time for ease of use, no breaking parts, and ample performance for less than $20.

If your using 16 strand you don't use a lock brummel, you simply use a standard 16 strand splice and when you go to cross over you simply cross over the cover coming from the other side. Hope this helps.

It's true. Chip is an entirely disagreeable person, prone to fits of rage and jealousy.

But he's a good road trip guy.

Kind of a weird dichotomy.
