Home made depth gauge micrometer

I used to use a feeler gage to set rakers on a racechain and had a magnetic depth gage to measure each raker afterwords. Not work chain though, thats over kill to me.

That is a nice set-up to assure consistancy. But it is more important to remember that raker height should be a dynamic number that increases as the cutter tooth is sharpened back. As a chain is sharpened, the width of the gullet increases, and the ideal angle(~6°) formed by the top of the cutter plates and the top of the raker will change (decrease) if the raker height isn't increased. When a chain nears the end of usability, the rakers may need to be .040"+ to make chips like a new chain.

Yeah, no, you gotta just spitball that raker depth; nobody gets laid with a micrometer in his hand . . .

Your quotes are gospel to me.

Thanks, EZ; it's nice to run into you down here in one of these remote, chainsaw-geek threads nobody else reads. Tom was around earlier, but he just posted and left, in a dutiful manner. I don't think he really cares about the minutia of raker specs, so if we want to hijack this bugger and just use it as a personal hang-out, I think we might go unnoticed. I need a quiet little place where I can just drink whisky and run up my post count a bit.

From Cary Shepherd at Husqvarna after i sent him the link:

Depth ga. is still set to approx. .020 for hard wood and .030 for soft wood.

Enjoy your time here Arch, I'll bet you have good whisky!

I underestimate your immanence! You were here all along, watching as I made a fool of myself. To stay topical, I like my rakers low and dirty because I like my chips like my ladies, thick and curvy! And I would have better whisky if I had one of those Spec's Liquor stores up here; whenever I'm in Austin I shop at the one on Brodie Lane and load up for the haul. Got a great bottle of 15 yr old Macallan and a good Kentucky bourbon (Willett Family Reserve). Good times in Austin!

The Dunlap is omniscient, particularly when a thread involves home made micrometers. You truly were a fool to think we could derail this into a you drink whiskey and I'll stick with my beer post-a-thon.

So to keep it topical; I like my women like I like my golf courses - cheap and unirrigated.
