The tree-related portion is the zipline that they use to get across the chasm. I don't know the details of the battle but I get the sailors had to man-haul the cannons over walls and across a chasm. It would be fun to see them fire and score for accuracy too!
The legendary competition among portions of the British Navy to metaphorically reproduce a heroic effort to move field guns over rough terrain to help relieve Ladysmith during the Boer War. It involved getting a gun weighing 3/4th of a ton over five-foot walls, through holes in walls, and most importantly over a 28-foot "chasm".
