Historic tree bites the dust

Been here much more than a while
Location
My Island, WA
This tree is important to me on many levels. Growing up as a kid I would take field trips in school to Fort Vancouver established by the Hudson’s bay company. We visited this tree.. Every year we would go to the fort to watch the ‘biggest firework display west of the Mississippi’.. I would climb on the fencing around the tree as a impatient child waiting for my parents when we went out to eat at the near by restaurant.

Many years later (just a few years ago) I learned that my ancestor Richard Cheeseman joined the HD company, and was tasked to move Ft Vancouver to Victoria BC after the northern boarder was established.

Now I don’t have any settler pride, it wasn’t my choice to be here but it certainly was a choice my distant relatives made. However it’s still a trip, realizing that this tree is in my blood.

194 year old apple tree, that’s amazing. sad to see it go, but good on the participants for planning ahead with propagation.

had the pleasure of doing a dormant oil application on TDR’s personal orchard at sagamore hill. Most of the 75 apples are young replacements but there was about 6 original trees still remaining.
