The climbing rope is threaded through the shackle that's hanging on the lower right, attached to the short runner. Then the climber's rope goes over the sheave. To retrieve the RG, I detach my climbing line and pull the splice end back over the pulley which is then pulled out when the splice catches on the shackle. Follow? If your rope wasn't spliced you'd have to come up with an alternate stopper system that would still slip through the shackle that holds the sheave.
