Hey guys, despite some well written presentations with peer reviewed research backing up my position, it seems that it is beyond a city arborists power to grant me permission to plant heritage tree replacements from smaller nursery stock. I am happy to share the research if there's any doubt here, but in the meantime, I am gonna have to learn how to plant stupid big trees.
I am told that for some reason, until now, my company has been having the landscape install team plant trees, and they seem to make all the classic landscaper mistakes. It's been embarassing to find this out, but I am working on changing how they do things.
We have almost any piece of equipment one could need except probably a tree spade, but we have plenty of machines that one could use to run one.
The two municipalities I'm dealing with are insisting on 24" box trees. I feel pretty certain that the trees will require some root pruning, but being so large, I am curious how one handles the logistics of doing that and then actually placing them in the hole.
To be clear I know how to plant a tree, I just have never planted one I couldn't pick up and move by myself, except back in the day when I would just get them into position with a helper and then cut away the pot once it was positioned in the hole. At that time I was too sqeamish to disturb the roots much, so I just didn't do things optimally. Every one of those trees was burned in a wildfire anyway, so I will be spared the embarassment of those trees dying from insane girdling roots.
