Help for a Newbie!

Hello all. I originally posted this under the "Climbers Talk" section and I got some great advice and, I hope to be tagging along on a climb soon (Thanks to all, especially familytree for the invite!!).

I also wanted to post it here in case there is anyone who hangs out solely in the "Recreational" area.

I'd like to learn recreational tree climbing. Does anyone know of any group, organization, or individual, in or around the South Jersey area that I can contact for more help and practical training??

Any help, advice, recommendations, steering in a particular direction etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Try posting on the TCI rec forum, there are some South Jersey rec climbers who post there once in awhile. They also have a "find climbers in your area" feature on the web site.

I don't think you'll have to pay to post in the forum. The reason I mentioned TCI is that there are at least two climbers from South Jersey and more from other parts of Jersey who hang there. I didn't realize you have to pay to use the "find a climber" search. No free lunch as they say. Definitely worth posting an inquiry on the TCC forum as JZ mentioned.

moss and jerseygirl - Thanks for the info. I checked out the TCI posts and there were a couple inquiries about climbers in the Delaware and Philly area but no one responded to them.

Is there a concern about taking a newbie under your wing??
I'm kinda getting the idea from some other posts that it might be. I know tree climbing whether recreational or professional, is inherently dangerous. Is there a fear of the "student" possibility getting injured and the "instructor" possibly getting sued?

By the way jerseygirl, the picture of the squirrel brought a smile to my face. I wonder if any of the squirrels that pillage (as you would say) my bird feeders have a suit like that.

Thanks again for the info.

There may be some liability concern but I think that it would be minimal. The tree c limbers that I know who have been interested in taking a new climber up have all been generous with their time and knowledge.

Hooking up with another climber nearby may be difficult. Keep poking around and active on the forums, you'll find someone to climb with.

Tom - Thanks for the insight. I was hoping it wouldn't be a big issue but I just thought I would ask. Everyone I've had contact with so far on TreeBuzz has been pretty cool with their info and advice so I think I'll hang around awhile and check things out some more.
