Help a newbie with a VT Hitch.......

Whiz,

Sorry..... Just was feeling fiesty and decided to throw back. Lol

Actually I have not decided what hitch I like yet. I keep coming back to the VT on 25" 8mm Beeline. I have a 28" cord and tried climbing with a 5/1 Knut /Michocan but it took two hands to release it at times. Is there a better cord that I should try on 11mm Bandit? I am afraid that 10mm Beeline would not grab..... Suggestions?

I have been busy with some splicing...... Here is my.latest hitch cord. Not near perfect but I am learning. Still looking for advice on how it is usually done.....

Here is my first double braid splice....... Just about ruined my hands.... Had blisters for four days after this project but I refused to give up.

BearMan, all I want to say is that you clearly have skill, though it's impossible to know how a splice will hold from a photograph.

I think you may want to poke around in 'the splice rack' here on TreeBuzz, and start a thread or two there (pun intended). There's a good number of helpful guys that post in that section, and lots of posts that already cover the types (and classes of cordage) of splices you've shown here.

With all respect, climb on!

It didn't read like a jab from here. You're good. :)

Bear, when you're milking the cover back up to finish a db class 1 splice you can save your hands using a prusik.

I'll put a schwabisch or klemheist on the rope and milk it toward the eye. When you're working up the throat you can loosen the hitch a bit and work up to the eye. The KY works well with that too.

If it's an easier rope to work with I'll usually just put on my welding gloves.

BTW, I'm not into fishing but I think that rod looks sweet too. Nice work!

I am still learning and have had several climbs in the last week. I just got a order in from Tree Stuff and have a couple of different cords to try. I looked at the Armor Prus but decided to wait and see if what I ordered would work first. I have been happiest so far with a VT tied with 8mm Beeline in 25" length. Only problem with it so far is how long it is getting. The last twist is straight to the pulley and the rope is hitting my stiff tether. Also the hitch is almost touching my RW so hand room is down to nothing.

My new options are some Ice tail that I think may be too flexible, some 10mm Beeline, and some 10mm Ocean Polyester. I will check back after I experiment more....... I am also wondering if I chose my Yale Bandit rope poorly. I have a sample of 40' of Yale Imori to try. I plan to use it as a long lanyard but see how it works as well. I am needing a longer rope already and have been looking at the Imori and Luna...... My 11mm is getting really thin as it breaks in iMHO...... Suggestions are always welcome. ;-)

i climb on poison ivy (same thing as the luna) and 11mm tachyon. which i think is similar to your bandit not sure though. on the ivy i go with the 10mmm beeline with the thinner rope i use 8mm armor prus. i agree with ARBOR ENHANCE that it doesnt grab well on the smaller rope. i use a 5 wrap michoacan hitch for both and its awesome tends great and will not lock up. theres several links on you tube on how to tie it. i think youll like it

BearMan, I would suggest you go with Imori and 10mm hitch cord if you weigh 190 or more, without gear. It's just a matter of proportions. Bigger ropes for bigger folks...

I find the Michoacan is brilliant, too.

I agree with you..... I like the hitch but I don't have the right combination yet. It will lock up with my setups.......
