Help a newbie with a VT Hitch.......

Yes, I am doing a eye 2 eye like is common I believe. I do a locked Brummel on each end after pushing back the Bee Line cover. I bury 6" with a slight taper and then adjust the cover to fit. I then sew a locking stitch with 30# braid and whip finish the cover. It all pulls down nice and tight. I then dip the exposed core eye in some flexible cement to harden it a bit to hold the shape and protect the fibers. I am pretty sure that I am close to what common practice is....... I am happy with them so far. I have three different ones made up so far.

Sounds pro to me! The dip is a nice thing to do for those exposed core splices. It also makes it easier to load onto a 'biner.

Keep it up, and maybe post some of your work in 'The Splice Rack'.

Oh, and you're not the only one that "obsesses". My current apartment come with 14' ceilings and the coolest landlady on the planet. I've got permanent lines set!

I'm hot on your heels! I finally completed negotiations with Dawn for my living room TIP. I might start welding tonight.

Well my TIP is only 10' hanging from my basement floor joices (sp?) but I have been playing with the hitch fpr two weeks straight.

Thanks for the help everyone...... I have also read the thread mentioned above and the article in the archives. I have settled on the Michocan / Knut in the 4/1 configuration with an 25-26" eye to eye in 8mm Beeline. I like how short and neat it is and how straight the rope stays. I tried a 5/1 and it seemed to act too different for my taste. It tended to get too long in a hurry and didn't give me much gap between it and my RW. I will see if I can get some YouTube action of it this weekend.

Oceans likes the 5/1 but his 10mm cord may be the difference. Please correct this newbie if I have made an error anywhere here.....

There's nothing better than actually seeing someone tying a hitch you're about to start playing with.

Here's a video from moss on tying an XT http://vimeo.com/38669647

It was pretty helpful to watch and follow along while I was getting the muscle memory for it.

I've never seen the XT before. I'm gonna have to try it now sometime. Why would you say to use it over a VT or would you not?

I just sneaked out before an hour before dark for a quick climb. I knew that it would be good when I nailed the exact crotch I was aiming for on the FIRST THROW! When does that happen? I just got a new CT foot ascender and wanted to test the Knut hitch.

Here is the Knut /Michocan 4/1 freshly dressed.

Here is it up in the tree with no load on it but after some moving around and limb walking.

I stopped twice to loosen the hitch but it seemed to lock up if I loaded it too hard. Overall I was a little disappointed in the hitch. It seemed to work fine for descending but I had to un-weight it before descending. I need to compare to the VT and XT and XXT but I was loosing daylight. For some reason it seemed to tighten even after re-dressing twice. Suggestions?

I'm just gonna say that something looks weird in regard to the eye splice in the first photo. Is that a Locked Brummel? It looks like the braid is opened right up quite a bit. Maybe I'm just seeing things...They look more normal in the second photo.

Yes.... I am still learning. I wasn't sure which way to run the core through. I figured out what I did on the next splice. I was flipping the fibers the wrong way. Basically it is turned inside out instead of outside in.... Lol. I feel it is purely cosmetic but correct me if I am wrong. That's the only one that came out that way.

Cool, so long as you know what happened. I'd be concerned if there wasn't any critical thought behind it...please, no offense. It's only our lives we're concerned about.

So, if you find that it binds, try the next size up in hitch cord diameter, which may be a bit of a trick due to your climb line diameter. Is that Yale's 'Bandit' (11mm)?

Yep.....Yale Bandit 11mm. I did try a 5/1 again tonight and bounced on it hard. I couldn't get it to lock up once. Maybe I should listen to you more ...lol... the short 4/1 is nice and compact and graps quick but IT HAS TO RELEASE. I am making a 28" 8mm Beeline and see how that does. I have a 25 and 33 at the moment. I had a 30 and 28 with knots but they seemed bulky.

They are. Good eye, Eric. I'm glad you two are bouncing it off each other.
When I first started wrenching I used a 4:2vt and it opened every time I made a lunge and I had to deliberately set it every time I rested...then my Pantin kicked off mid-lunge. Oops. I like the small collection of tethers I now have that keep the wrench off the top of the hitch but I still avoid the vt when ascending. I was really hesitant about the xt but I can make it work and it grabs nice when ascending "sit, stand". .2 shutting up still.

the electrical tape is ugly. Learn to lockstitch. love you

Geez Whiz! I feel the love bro! Lol. Glad to know that I will get the truth here........ No offense taken though.

I am a greenie..... I was using the electrical tape to cover my ugly lock stitching until I got some waxed thread. It just came yesterday from Tree Stuff and I have another prettier hitch cord in the works. ..... I will be sure to post a pic for analysis ;-)

...and you're still a greenie

Just thought I'd share something that I am good at...... Carey Gibson? may appreciate it if nobody else does..... Just to prove that I can work with thread and wrap in a straight line.... Lol

This is the smallest rod I have made. It is all made by me except for the reel and eyes...... It is a 5' 1# weight...... The tip is 0.025" and made of 6 pieces of bamboo. It was the most fragile rod I have ever made.

Wow-

I got a splicer in my crew who can handle pretty much any splice, but he'd be green if he could see that- he's just getting into custom rod building.

Like you say, everyones got something they rock at. Bring that kind of attention to detail to splicing and you'll nail it.

Beautiful work, BearMan! I'm sure your splices will be primo once you get it down!
