helmet cleaning update

Hi, all.

For the record, I took Frans' advice and soaked my helmet in a mild vinegar solution a few minutes. After a good rinsing, it was much improved. I may still have to repeat the operation pretty often (today was the 4th or 5th day in a row over 100* F.), but at least I get some non-funky time in between celanings.

Thanks, Frans.

Helmet\'s plus sweat

I know there are quite a bit of us that use the Petzl helmets (mine's yellow with the vent holes). I find that the cushions that go around the head make a lot of sweat drip onto my face/in my eyes, simply due to the fact that they aren't absorbent.

I took an old shirt, cut a small square, doubled it over the forehead strap/cushion, and sewed the top of it together. It works way better than before. The downside is that you have to have minute sewing skills (which some people avoid like trees with thorns). It keeps a lot of the sweat out, but on those super, super hot days, there's no avoiding the sweat!

ps- you could also get the terry cloth sweatbands from sherrill, but why pay money for something so simple!

Re: Helmet\'s plus sweat

Actually, I do use those terry bands from Sherril's. Why? for 3 bux and a phone call, I'm done. What hourly rate do you pay yourself when stitching these together? Also, by keeping a half dozen of these things around, I can snap off yesterday's and put on a fresh one, then wash in the laundry. And, yes, in this weather (110*F yesterday) it's stiff as a board in the morning after one day's work.

Re: Helmet\'s plus sweat

Last week I cleaned my stinky ROC helmet. I took of the foam liner, then just washed it in the kitchen sink after doing the dishes. Lemon scented soap and all!

It turned out quite nice. It didn't stink and it felt clean. Next time you see the wife doing dishes, just casually set the helmet near by. Maybe she won't even notice!
