helmet brims

Been here much more than a while
Location
Detroit, Mi.
Odis Sisk wears a slick cloth type brim that fits around his climbing helmet and gives shade. Anyone know where I can get some of these things. Combatting the sun, and I need some help.

Kayak supply company or REI

I have one but the brim is a bit too long.

You can take a sheet of neoprene and make a hole in the center to make a full brim. One that has a long, neck cover too...like a beaver tail.

Nothing should be worn under a helmet...according to manufacturers recommendations.

IF!!!...you're going to put something under the helmet it shouldn't interfere with the shock absorbing ability of the suspension. A do-rag or thin liner could work because they're thin and don't have the button on top like a ball cap.

Think of the suspension as a snow shoe and the good support that you would get. Then, step on a something and have all of the load concentrated in one point. It defeats the 'web' support and turns it into a point load...directly on your head.

I used to do bit of drywalling, those buttons were the first thing to go. Think of a 4x12 sheet of 1/2" drywall resting on that bloody button(doing the ceilings of course).....yeah you get the point.
When I first started I used to have to stuff my hat as well, but eventually you build up a tough spot up there.
lol.

He said a baseball cap tree police. Wtf I can ride a motorcycle in most states without a helmet up to 75 MPH, yet I have to wear a fag hat to climb a tree cause of munches like you. How about this make a rule about more training before you turn your 3 year rookie loose on a tree then maybe just maybe we would not have so many mishaps.

Maybe something like an appecs system like the uions do, you start at the bottom and spend time before you become the so called man in your company. Might lead to less deaths, althouth it will cost more for companies in the end. have to pay a rate climber a set rate huh? 15-18 an hour might kill some of you, a real one will want 20-30 maybe even more?.

no button on my cap! I figured i had to decide between melanoma on my face or risk splitting my skull in half because a a baseball "style" cap!?Slow death or rapid? also it shades my baby blues ,fried retina no good either!

Can I have the rapid please?

Do what you like Holly...

And...read my words carefully before you blather.

It's not my rule...it's an OSHA reg. If a liner is designed for the purpose it passes muster, if not, like it or not, its a violation. Do with that what you will.

There are better and safer ways to solve the problem of shielding the sun out of the eyes than wearing a ball cap under a helmet. Why wouldn't someone do that, regulation or not?

I do boss, I've cheesed out to ice helmets. They come with some kind of sheild or visor. They can be placed and locked in diff spots to block the sun. I've given up on the ohsa telling me it has to be a class 3 for work in the tree.

Don't get me worng, I belive firmly that when on the ground under work, you need a real hard hat. I find in the tree IMO it's just ummmmm?

I remember the fist late 60's NHL game where headgear was optional, skaters demanded no gear option (they wanted personality recognition on the ice). Can;t remember the player, but he took a half-rink slapshot on the frontal lobe, killed instantly. Helmets were popular again.

Motorcycle accidents and head injury? If no helmet, the costs of treatment and long-term care should be shouldered by the decider, not the insurance company.

Why do I wear a seat belt in a car? Why do I wear a helmet on my wimpy little scooter? Why do I climb with a helmet in a tree? It seems simple to me. Well trained or not nobody gets to decide when an accident will occur. My helmet has saved my noggin several times on the ground but I have never had a problem in the tree. But, it is bound to happen and when it does I want a helmet on my head.

Funny you guys are talking about when to wear helmets...

So while remodeling our bathroom last Wednesday I was on a short stool. 2x4 blocking I was pulling into place popped loose and split my nose open between my eyes. Lost my balance, stepped off the stool and tried to regain said balance. 3 stumbling steps later I'm still trying to catch my balance, going about 30 mph, and crash head first into the footboard of the bed. 2 days of headaches and nausea later my wife tries telling me I should wear my climbing helmet for home improvement....or maybe just put it on when I wake up in the morning.

In a unionized environment then you'd be wearing that hardhat/helmet all the time along with every other safety gear prescribed by OSHA. HR, stop blaming the "rookie" climbers for every accident. Too often it's a veteran that gets hurt because of complacency and that old school mentality.

Wasn't it Dale Earnhardt Sr. who died because he refused to wear the neck protection that is mandatory in Nascar? Stupid is as stupid does.....
