heat shrink tube and splices. ??

Hello. I have some experience with splicing but not a great deal. I'm looking at transparent heat shrink tubing on eBay to give some eyes a finishing touch and maybe put label beneath like a pro one - rope type, rating, date etc. All of the tubing I'm looking at has 2:1 shrink ratio according to the descriptions. I am seeking advice about the size of tube to buy for 8,10 and 11-12 mm ropes. If i splice eyes into 8mm prussik for example, the bury might add a couple of mm, a whipping might add a couple more. Would 20mm heat shrink tube (with the 2:1 shrink ratio..) be appropriate? can I damage or weaken my ropes or splices by using tube which was too small? can the tubing shrink further than advertised if i used a bit which was too big? It seems to me that you want to choose the right piece before you even begin the splice (at least on the second eye..) because you need it on there beforehand..

Also, Id really like to use heat shrink tube to stiffen up the footloop tether to my knee ascender so that I can have the bungee from the footloop (like haas, saka ) pushing the ascender up rather than pulling it over my shoulder, i think i need to get it (10mm prussik cord..) stiff like a rope wrench tether. How many layers of shrink tube does this take? (i need to preload em on before splicing eh..)

thanks for your time, i really appreciate it, best..

Your best results and longest lasting heat shrink tubing would be the 3:1 with interior adhesive.. If you want to see one of my splices with it, let me know. You'll be much happier with the final results. There's a company in NY that sells the HS Tubing in 4 foot lengths very reasonable prices.

thank you boys, I went to my arb-mart today and got some ($42 / 1.2meter !! )

+ oops you know how that goes, 2x petzl 0, 1 x hitchclimber, rope scraps, $250odd...
edit +1 really cool little telescoping hook from stein, super nice...

Don't get me wrong
TreeStuff is Great, but if you look around, you'll find that heat shrink tubing is a lot less expensive! You just have to look. You can get the same or even a better quality product. It just takes a bit of effort on our part!

The 4:1 is great if you've spliced something onto the end of a rope and forgot to put the shrink tubing on, first. With it, you might be able to get it over the hardware and still have it shrink down tight against the splice. That is about the only scenario where it's worth the higher price. The shrink ratio doesn't increase the "squeeze power" any, although the heavier wall thickness on the good stuff affects this slightly.

I recently bought some 3:1 heatshrink tubing from heatshrink.com and they were really great. They have lots of colors and sizes, they deliver really quick, and their prices are great. They sell in 4' lengths. I paid 2.93 per foot for 12 mm medium wall tube.
