Handsaw choices

I've used the silky zubat for yrs. Lately I feel like the quality has gone down. Don't last as long not as sharp initially either. I switched to samurai saws. I've been very impressed. They are now the standard I hold other hand saws too. samurai
Also try the glacier blade. Just got one. Hopefully it makes the blade last even longer than it already does.

I have a zubat and a sugoi. I bought the zubat first. Both are great.

Generally I climb with the zubat. Its more of a production saw IMO. Great for bigger cuts. The handle fits in my hand with a little hook at the end so its more comfortable. The blade is too aggressive for some small stuff.

If Im pruning fruit trees, or doing other smaller stuff I use the zubat. Finer teeth mean you can be more gentle on little suckers and stuff. The handle doesn't quite fit my hand as well for that power cutting.

A friend had I think it was the gomtoro. It was the straight one with the last two inches super fine teeth. I think that would be awesome for Japanese maples and such where you want to be really careful with your cuts.

i have used everything on the market and personaly feel that silky saws are the best thing going.
I use a sugoi 360 for removals and a curved tsuirugi 330 lg with a sawpod for all of my pruning.
for those of you that have not had the chance to try out the new curved tsiurugi i highly reccomend it!
its the bomb! the handle is super comfy even for someone with LX size hands and it doesnt pull apart like i thought a two part handle would.
Also it stays sharp for a dogs age just like the rest of silkys products!

Started with a corona. Went to Sugoi, now rocking a samurai. The price and the quality of the samurai is on target. My silky disapeared in a heavily ivy covered oak. Scabbard and all. I never felt natural with it on my leg. I even had custom velcro straps made and it just didnt cut it for me. Cut it get it?

P.s. at half the price you can't go wrong giving it a shot

Derrick, how are the scabbards on the Samurais? Does the saw lock in well?

Oh yeah, somewhere in Suffolk, Va there's an Oak covered in ivy with a free Zubat just waiting to be retrieved. The tree might engulf it otherwise

Samurai Ichiban. Performs great at a reasonable price. Scabbard that comes with it is a toy. Suggest buying an aftermarket scabbard straight away. With replacement blades $20 cheaper than zubat blades, it's an easy choice for me.

Understood, the scabbards aren't good with the Samurai. But are there aftermarket combinations where the saw will lock into the scabbard? Where scabbard can go inverted but the saw stays in?

A strong magnet is the best security. I read that in an old post by Tom D.
I think he puts a strong magnet (rare earth magnet) somehow on his scabbard and the saw will not drop out but it can be easily pulled out.

Zubat just seems like the smoothest cut , I got a couple free Samurais years ago at a trade show and I cant remember how they cut.

Ok my choice these days is the silky curved Tsurugi, I use the 330 mostly and switch to the 270 when fine pruning as the teeth are less aggressive....that coming fron Zubat and Sugoi...still have the prosenti and gomtaro...just don't use them anymore....

I don't care for the samurai. Never had a scabbard last more than a couple weeks before it breaks and my handsaw is somewhere on the ground. Sharpness doesn't last long either.
Silky is the way to go, but pricy.
I picked up a sugoi 420, it's too long for my leg, but it means the chainsaw can stay on the ground for removals until I get into bigger wood

Silky for sure. Any large toothed handsaw that allows u to leave the chainsaw on the ground.(at least sometimes) hey John, it is court from gh. Having trouble with the pm deal. Good to hear from u. Stay safe

Also at risk of embarrassing both of us. I used to baby sit John back in the day. Glad to hear we r both in the same line of work. Sorry for derailing, now back to handsaws...

Anybody else having problems with Silky Zubat blades? I have busted the tips off of the last three blades while sawing. The blade gets slightly bound in the wood and snaps the tip off; twice about an inch and a half back, then last week 3" back. It's driving me crazy and getting a little expensive to replace the blades. Every time temperatures have been in the 40's. Bailey's listed a "Limited Lifetime Warranty" but I have a feeling it's for the handle. Quality of steel just isn't what it used to be.

I also have had good luck with the samurai ichiban. Haven't had any issues with the scabbard though, and it has been on my saddle for about 6 months. That being said I have been considering a gomtaro to try out a straight blade saw, as I like to use a handsaw to control the hinge in certain circumstances.
