Any reason why this should NOT be done?
All the MOD's below are in the 'non-life-support' plastic part.

I'm still thinking , is that to secure the unit while un clipped to change line ?

That's right ... when attacked by the Fumblies.

There's a Gri-Gri modification that rock climbers have done for many years. It's done to modify the action for some specific reason that escapes me right now. A hole is drilled in the plastic block and the shell too. This isn't sanctioned by Petzl but you could find out what others have done to the GG using a Google search of some sort.

You could also mold a glob of epoxy onto the shell/plastic and then drill a hole in the glob.

I like it a lot! It's the weak point using a Grigri, your idea takes away a minor anxiety point, especially for winter climbing when fingers might not be working so well. There's probably more than a couple climbers who've dropped Grigris from up high in woods situations and never found them, for starters it may never reach the ground and if it does might be embedded a foot deep in the duff or snow, good-bye Grigri.

Note: I wouldn't leave a tether clipped in while the Grigri is installed on the rope, too much of a pain but would be nice to clip it in for installing on and off the rope.

Can't imagine Petzl sanctioning any mod at all ... not looking for any 'sanction' ... just don't want to miss any sound advice.

The grigri has been modifyed by rockclimbers so it can be used for solo lead climbing. One files away some of the metal where the rope comes in. This makes the rope run easy through. And then add a cord in the plastic, so the grigri can be attached to a chest harness.

None of the mods have impact on the strength of the grigri, but Petzl wont recomend it, of course.

Point taken. However, for WRADS, the GRIGRI always stays engaged throughout the entire climb except for line changes, re-routes, pitch changes, etc.

So, in my mod below, the keeper is just long enough to allow a line change and not get 'caught' or in the way. Now the entire system is linked with nothing to drop.

Ive been using one for 12 years rock climbing, and that mod was shown to me when I bought my first one. As stated above, Petzl wont sanction it, but its a great little trick, and it works fantastic at preventing a drop.

I'll chime in as well and say that your mod is just fine. I've used the other modification mentioned by Tom for solo rock climbing. I can attest to the fact that you can take more material off the gri-gri than you have (in the appropriate areas of course) and it will still catch a whipper!
