Great Horned owl rescue

Today Ian (sizzler) and myself went out to put a baby owl into a repaired nest. The old nest failed. Here's the pic of the old nest.

How did it go? WHen you say failed do you mean it fell out or collapsed. Was this an effort of good will. How did you go about it? Was "momma" around? Sounds exciting. Elaborate please.

Here's a pic of the bird in its new home. After I placed the little guy in, I was careful to scream in his face," I have given you back your life! Respect me! I am man, and I hold dominion over natural things! you are nothing! you disgusting feathery abomination!" I was also sure to repeatedly flick him betwix the eyes during my screaming. I don't know about you guys, but I feel most like a man when I'm holding a huge saw, or hurting a small animal.

Roger, it went off without a hitch. By 'failed' I meant collapsed. Great Horned don't build nests. They move into old ones. This nest was dilapidated and the outside edge just 'rolled' out during all the rain we've been having. No this wasn't an effort of good will. We only care about money at Integrity Tree Preservation. We initially charged $40,000.00 for the repair and placement, but when i was actually in the tree, I dangled the bird out and demanded another 10k and a box of donuts, or I'd drop him. Momma bird was a ways off during this phase of the opperation. good thing too, she probably would've ruined the whole ransom thing.

Aha, so you are the one that drove from the road around the trees to get the little ducklings /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A great feeling isn't it, to get such a little thing up in the tree again. That's what life is about. O jeah, and the big saws ofcourse /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

40 grand eh . . . wasn't there a nest building charge also?, or did you flick some other creature out of its nest? /forum/images/graemlins/icon314.gif

Looks like chicken!!! /forum/images/graemlins/boidchick.gif /forum/images/graemlins/croc.gif

I replaced a great horned owl where the George Bush Presidential Library now stands. The momma owl flew in and watched me from about 2 meters away. I was shaking with fear of wearing that momma owl for a hat.

Good on you guys, what a marvelous bird ... I just googled it, pretty big chick too.

Do you think mum will be back etc? Some birds are wierd like that, move the nest or put it in other tree etc they nick off!

I wondered that as well, but the lady from the raptor rescue center was confident that the mother wouldn't mind the change. And apparently it takes a few days before the mother decides that the baby isn't coming back.

Got a call Sunday, the homeowner hadn't seen the parents and was worried. Scott Altenhoff and I went out, and while setting lines pissed off one angry owl. the idea was to check up on junior, give him some owl juice, or take him back to the raptor center. The Homeowner apperntly couldn't see the bird through the foliage. Success.

so did you just stick him in a hole in a tree? made a new nest? just left him on a branch? very cool animal, and like he said, good karma

Agreed...awesome job and very cool looking little creature decked out in what thousands (or millions)of years evolution have equipped him with to live outside in the wild.
