GRCS strap not long enough

Hi all. I have a possible removal job coming up, maybe this year but nothing definate as yet. Anyways the trunk circumference of the tree is bigger than the strap for the GRCS and its a straight trunk, so there are no buttress or lumps that can be removed to make it smaller.

Anyone get any suggestions? I'll ask Greg Good for advice if I actually get closer to the job being done. Like I say its a long way off yet, but any thoughts appreciated.

I've used a 3/4" Tenex one eyed sling.

The spliced end of the sling went on the very end of the yellow strap (where the black clip is). I then put a bowline on the tail end of the sling. I put a steel biner on the GRCS clip in location and put the bowline in the biner. Cinched up the GRCS like normal and it worked fine.

***Disclaimer: I'm not saying this was the best solution, or the safest, or the best practice on the spliced end of the sling (due to the rope bend ratio). I'm not liable for any failure in rigging. I'm just sharing my solution to that problem. I used it once and I wouldn't do it every day.

..... is there another lesser butt handy to attach the GRCS .adding one(or two more) blocks , and some more length in the rig line .... or is the tree out all alone .... PS , there is always the truck mount option .... Dave

No other trees nearby and no vehicle access.

I did figure a longer strap would be the obvouse reply! But it needs a sewn bar in the end to fit it into the grcs I think, so whilst the straps in the link above looks great, I don't see how the end gets attached in the center of the ratcheting bit on the GRCS ??

Jamin's solution is top so far.

Thanks for replies.

Can't you just slip the end in somewhere and doesn't the winding up do the trick in holding it in place?
Can't check it on my own GRCS. Jelte and I bought one together and for a goodbye present he got 'my half' and went of with it to NZ

I'll have to buy my own soon. When you get used to a gizmo like that it's hard to get around without it.

BTW, that's going to be a big sucker you have to take down Rupe.

Yes, I guess you are right, I'll have another look. I suppose as long as there is plenty wound in there it should be ok. Just wanted it to be perfectly safe as there will be some big bits!

BTW, Cedar Lebanon, fat!! Quite large and spready, but not a definate take down yet. We'll see.

Than don't Rupe. If there is one tree species that is a perfect candidate for extreme crown reduction and still end up with a nice natural shape, than that's the Lebanon Ceder.

I have shaped storm damaged Ceder trees back to beauties, and If you need a bigger strap that means it's already a beauty even only because of it's sheer volume.

Its not healthy at all mate, anyway its not my call, I just do the work as instructed. But if we did reduce it we would still need the GRCS attached, so at the moment decisions are being made, fell, reduce, leave it alone etc.

Cant really notch it, the strap is way to short, so it would have to be notched all round. There are no buttresses to be removed either, its just fat and striaght. Also if the decision is to reduce it then notches are of course no good.

I havn't really looked at the tree yet, so don't have any specific pictures, and I'm only taking the circumference measurements from the surveyors report but it can be seen in this photo taken during other works.

Its the one behind the church.

As said before though, removal is not definatly going to happen, reduction is possible. A former queen of england is burried within the church though, so the owners are keen to not cause any damage to the church.
