Good Reason to leave Spars

This is a spar next to my house. The top has been gone for 5 years.Still quite useful.

Did they make the hollow or did you start it for them?

They made some and other woodpeckers made the rest. The last few years there was a bunch of downy woodpeckers. 2 years ago one resembling a hairy woodpecker used it as a home to raise a couple.

That has got to be cool, to sit and watch.
Do they make alot of noise?

They do. The babies are calling back and forth to the adults. It sounds alot better than the cars racing up and down the streets though.

Its nice to wake up to also.

That is nice to see and hear, that is a great reason to leave a spar.

In Germany is is not unusual to make a Spechtbaum.

It also has the benefit of allowing you to leave the big wood on site.
