good planting / bad planting....

Thats a pic from yesterday 13-01-06. That planted area has been a wet zone since they rebuild the roads there. I know at this place only one drain is put at a totally wrong place. No messures were taken to brake the soil layers to let the water penetrate. Also the posts with the trees are 160cm long and 100cm above ground. Those poplars are planted in drilled ø60cm holes and those posts are just put with the trees in that hole. (poplars are not to deep planted though) The posts are not hammered firmly into the soil just filled in with loose soil in the drilled hole. The trees are one month in now and theres a lot of slack in the bandage that should support the tree. Its just a big blamage for the company that planted these...... Im sure they have to come back and do the work again. All waste of work and effort.

Where was this in Holland , they need shot? I always believe in staking young trees like these ones at 30cm (2/3 depending on soil condition) each apart from the stem and have the stakes 60cm high above ground level and secured with a good tree banding material.

I did my fair share of planting in the North Holland, But everything looked small after transplanting 30-35 ton Plane trees in Rotterdam.

It was in the south west area, Zeeland.

We ourselfs usually stake those posts at 20 or more cm outside the hole if we drill and push them in with the mobile crane. ALways firm in the ground. For banding we use that safety belt type of stuff or rubber banding.

thats big and nice work. Were the Planes heavily pruned?

This spring we have to plant 200 bigger Planes in belgium. I believe 40-50 cm circumfence at 1 meter height.

At the pic attached are two of our crew with a planted tree. I had to make some corrections in their work. guess what?

The planes that got transplanted had´nt been pruned, if I remember correctly they got pruned afterwards, dont ask me why. About 8 in total were transplanted, the first tree tip the 35 ton mark, so they had crane company from Duivendrecht (forgot there name, have red cranes) had to get a 25 toner in to ballast the 160 toner. That was interesting. It was an all day operation as we were doing pruning work also for the gemeente down there had two teams doing that as we had 65 planes too prune, 2 x 5 man teams 1 of these the highworker operator. Left Amsterdam at 5 in the morning got back just before midnight.

Yeh that seat belt material is the best, gets a good firm hold. Used it alot by Pius, also learned other planting methods also. Like how fix and to stop a 35 ton tree moving in the ground.

Maybe a few altercations to the planted tree, less soil round the basel area and neater banding, straighting the post up also.

Some things i told them to correct;

-1st wear safety vest for the righthand person :)

-2nd banding placed to high, it need to be about 5cm below head of post

-3rd I would like the tree with the top placed towards wind direction, in this case left is west side.

-4rd That arbor guard (against trimmer damage) isnt placed correctly. They just wrapped it around and it should be closed and the inside out.

-5th When nailing the banding they should double wrap the ends and use two nails.

-6th ALways try to make all trees look alike in work. So bandage nailed the same way as all previous trees. Try to have the wrappes and nails at back out of sight, also connections in arbor guard at the back. When having the left banding at top en right below then also that way on other trees.

The soil is higher at the base because the planting is done by mobile crane. Planting location is worked trough at 2x2 meters and 80cm deep. When the soil settels again the trees are (should be) at the correct spot.

Tot horens

Ronald
