Going to buy a Subaru...which one? Or another???

Vote for the Forester; it's a great utility car. I find it just as easy to move big things as I did with my capped Ranger.

Go for the 3rd gen, 2008 and up, with the timing-chain 2.5, and a much larger cabin... and stick with 5-manual, the 4-auto is a dog. Well worth the money.

I had a '99 Forester about six or seven years ago. Owned it for about two years. I liked that car a lot. It did have a slight oil leak probably the head gasket (never investigated, wasn't an issue). Head and leg room was fine for me being 6'2". I felt sorry for rear passengers though. Mine had a small towing hitch. The previous owner towed a little camping trailer with it. That screwed up the transmission. Re-build was covered by a warranty I bought with the car, but I was without it for three weeks. A good friend had the same car only his was a 2000. His had wheel bearing issues. I remember mine only getting about 22 mpg. My 04 jetta TDI gets close to 40 in the city. Much better!

How much driving do you do where you really need AWD? I would really recommend taking a look at the 2005-2006 Dodge Sprinter in either a 110" or a 140" wheelbase. I have a 06 2500 110" with the normal ceiling height. It gets around 25mpg and has more carrying capacity than anything else. The engine is a Mercedes 5 cylinder that is known for going forever if the maintenance is done. Rolling around in a vehicle that drives like a car, gets good mileage, has good clearance, and has tons of storage capacity is pretty nice.

They suck in the snow though... It is the perfect vehicle for me for 97% of the year. But for that 3% I just throw on chains and curse myself for not having a subaru...

Sprinter has caught my eye for a long time. It might be my choice as a second vehicle for camping. They're a bit big for my everyday needs.

Ford Transit is another eye catcher :)

Sprinter's rock! I drove a 3500 hightop dually as an electrician for a couple years. My young foot and a full load of tools/shelves and it still got 22mpg steady. I got it into some pretty muddy yards with hills, and rallied it out. I'm wishing I had a video now. something like 30 degree hill with a muddy curved 40' runway approach. It went. It might've been the duallys.
