Gaff sharpening

Anyone know a good way to properly sharpen spikes without having to buy a gauge ? I came across a pair of titanium bucks that need some tlc. thanx!

I just use a flat file and do the bottom only, staying with the shape of the gaff until the edge is free of little burs and nicks... fairly simple, takes five or ten minutes. The key is, use a vise and do the bottom only, don't touch the sides.

I always start out this way, and my intentions are good . . . but then something seizes on me and I go berserk; like a whorehound in a sex riot. Total frenzy and no sense of moral decency. I start to file on the sides and it doesn't matter who's looking!

I calm down after a bit, and use the hone to clean things up . . .

Yep, we all have our... vises.

Very nice, Blinky! LOL . . .

But Jamin? Using an angle grinder is like directing yourself in a snuff film. It will not end well for you. No machines, ever!

(It will get too hot, causing it to harden and brittle, possibly breaking under load . . .)

LOL! I know what you mean, I have found myself doing the same thing at times.

There are offset stirrups but the gaffs will all sharpen the same.

no im pretty sure kliens are offest spikes too. they are different then anything else i have seen. whats the proper filing angle for the tree spike with the stirrups standing up?
is it safer to have more of a downward vertical angle or horizontal?

I think most manufacturers make straight shanks and 'offset' shanks. It's the user's preference.
During sharpening, it's extremely important to keep the bevel on the last quarter inch of the gaff. One should sharpen the underside of the gaff only.

The 'plane test' is true for all gaffs. I start with a flat file and finish with a stone. I like my gaffs very sharp.
