Fuel Cost on the rise again.

Have not seen much on the effects of rising fuel cost posted. How is everyone holding up to the increase. The guys down South are you having trouble even getting fuel.

We had a gas scare in the Baltimore, MD area last Friday. A rumor was circulating that gas was low and stations were closing. It caused lines as long a as a mile at some stations. THe governor even made statement that it was only a rumor to try and settle things down. The highest gas price I've seen was just over $4.00.

Diesel on the other hand has not been a problem. Prices I've seen range from $2.89 to $3.15.

Is that litres or gallons. We are facing about 1$ and 80 pr litre for diesel and 2$+ for gas thanks to Katrina they say.

Thats per gallon. Its about 4 litres per gallon so you are paying $7.20 per gallon for diesel and over $8.00 per gallon for unleaded. I don't feel bad anymore. Here we were $2.41 per gallon for diesel before Katrina and $2.74 after there has been another increase but I have not fueled since then. Unleaded was up to $3.19 per gallon after Katrina. At least we don't have the lines and we still have a good supply.

It's a bit of a joke. I heard one gas station owner on the radio that they were raising the rates that high "because we can" and that the fines for doing so are $500 and "I'm making 5K per day easy! I'd rather pay the fine". /forum/images/graemlins/9lame.gif

My brother is in Mississippi. The other day he drove an hour to Mobile to get desiel for their generator. He waited in line for 3 hours and they would only allow him 8 gallons.

On the news last night they said that some place are now charging over 1pound a litre for diesel and petrol. Only a few weeks ago it went over 90p a litre for the first time.

Hé guys I found a cure.
I used to rage at 140 kph with a roofrack on top and a ladder on it over the motorway...
Took of the roofrack and put the cruise control on 125 kph. Hà. That serves them well.
My fuel consumption went from 8 km per liter down to 12,5 km per liter. Eat your heart out Exxon and Shell. O yea, and I started refueling at the non personel gas stations (Tango), that saves 8 eurocents per liter as well.

That would have cost us 150 pounds which is $275 US. !!

Just out of interest what sort of mileage do you guys do for most jobs? Obviously the states is a big place but what kind of area do you cover?

My furthest regular client is 40 miles from my house, and I rarely need to go further than that. On our roads, at peak traffic times that journey can take between 1 and 1.5 hrs.

I try to stay within 30 minutes of my garage. I never travel more than 1 hour. I do mostly residential work. I have switched from taken the company dump truck to my car for the estimates. This has cut my fuel use in half for the estimates. Being a owner operator I also do the estimates which are free so any savings helps. If I could hire somebody to just do estimates I would free up a lot of my time. Heck my wife might even to get to see me now and then.

I try and do estimates on my way home from jobs. I do free estimates too, so its a pain to make a special journey. If a client can wait until I'm booked in for work in their area then its ok, otherwise I have to make the journey.

This system all goes out the window in the winter as its usually dark on our way home, then estimates get done on the weekend.

I do estimates after finishing work also, thats why my microwave is one of my best friends. We will also work the weekends when we are busy so thats no different. I do however tell my wife not to schedule any estimates a couple days of the week. These days I also try to schedule easy jobs so we can get done early.
