Friction hitch poll

[ QUOTE ]
The tautline hitch is possible to tie one handed. Comes in handy in a pinch. [...]

Yep, that's why I use it for my ascender backup. You can tie two at the same time.

[...]I looked at Blinky's rig today, tied into a little piece of string on his saddle which he said was 15k # strong but it made me nervous. Then he told me a screw fell off his bridge thingy and he was basically untied when he noticed it.

I just checked today on that 15K # number, it's wrong. Atlantic Braids claims 6600# tensile on a Technora eye-eye... still pretty strong but after that shackle incident, I'm looking into a better way to setup my bridge.

With your closed system (no split tail) do you stay tied in to the tree full time?

[/ QUOTE ]o heck yes, i just lanyard in when i am retying. I learned back in the day that if you have 3 points of contact that is enough, without being tied in, but I don't trust free climbing anymore.

O and Blinky, 15,000 or 6,600 (before it started fraying with the sheath off, that is) what they hey, still plenty, eh?

I like the feel of a steel snap and a friction hitch.2 hours in a maple today, did not bind once.

Guess I'm old fashioned too...Most of the work I get is removals and I use a tautline hitch(with a split tail) If I am doing pruning then I use a Blakes. I use these hitches and I LIKE these hitches! I do plan to try out some new hitches this year but I have no problem with the tautline...and I figure I've got another good 20 years of climbing in me. Of course I think everyone should spend some time (prefferably recreational climbing) in a double bowline on a bite to see what our predesessors went through to climb.

i learned on a tautline and moved on from their, it just doesnt seem to make sense for my style of climbing, just about everyone out here in jersey uses em and they get the job done, but since i made the switch from spikeing everything, includeing trimmings, to the more preservational way, i had to adapt, as did my friction hitchs, when im working with two tie in points i break out the taut or blakes, but i get rid of it asap

I use two tiny ones to back up my ascenders... tautlines that is.

[/ QUOTE ]

Blink, would you mind showing or explaining how that works?

Cory- I live right outside of Keene- Where did you see the sale of KTS equipment. The equipment seems like a curb appeal thing to me. I don't know if they have any CA's or involvement with the industry like TCC's or workdays- since I have been in New England that is. I have seen some poor pruning in Keene proper, but I absolutely do not know who is responsible. They do have some exceptional equipment although. I will admit I know very little about KTS or their personell so have little room to judge.

It was a month or so ago. He was selling one of his log trucks and a few other items.

He sold one of his cranes last year or the year before too.

I kinda miss the tautline....Well the blakes anyways.

...I sure dont feel as bullet proof as I used to. Does this feeling ever go away?

[/ QUOTE ]

agreed, I am playing with newer knots and love them, but occasionally I just get that feeling in my spine (usually when the knot slips a bit for one reason or another) and run out a little tail, tie in a blakes, and scrap the eye-eye

Yo keith keen trees stuf was listed in last mounths TRee and truck trader. try there website maybe Thay have a kick [bad word] rearmount logtruck that dumps

This the basic setup I'm using except now I use tautlines instead of prussics because they're faster to tie one handed.

The cords bypass the ascenders and go all the way back to my harness tie-in.

Ignore the weird ascender setup. Right now I have a Jumar and a Petzl cuz I'm too cheap to buy another matching Petzl.

It was in this months Tree and Landscape Trader, which came a week ago in the mail, free.

good picture, and good set-up. Thanks for sharing.

Yes thanks Blink. If you had to descend, would you simply remove the 2 ascenders and then rappel on the 2 tautlines?

I never even thought of it but I suppose you could once you got the weight off the ascenders.

I've practiced by tying in mid-line with my regular friction setup for descent.
