footlocking

i was looking at the footlocking runners from wesspur and sherrill, the one in wesspur is 40 inchs and sherrill offers many differnt lengths. i am 6'1" what length should i use?

i have never footlocked with one before but there is a comp. coming up in the summer and i want to practice.

thank you in advance

I think that mine is like 5', but that is b4 I tie my 3 wrap prussik if I am climbing single line, or my kleimheist if it is double line. I saw those and thought that they looked real nice, but it seemed pretty short to me. Guys if I am wrong on length, sorry, please jump in and correct me. I too am 6'1" tall.

I dont really measure, I put on my harness and just measure the appropriate length by feel and then tie a double fishermans knot. So I really have never measured the actual length in feet or inches. Good luck.

If it helps, I'm 5'8 and I use a 50" prussik. I have no idea if it's what's I need but it works great.

The length measures from my bridge to the highest I can comfortable grab on my rope.

I'd take a guess that you'll need one quite a few inches longer then I use. The worst thing would be that you get one that is too short and it will limit your arms total range (up and down)

Hope this helped

I would tie an endless loop and run the footlocking prussik that way to start off with and you can tie knots in it or adjust as you see fit and once you have it where you like it then you can have it spliced to the length on which you decide.

Hitman, please don't type in all-caps

I just learned how about 6 months ago. And have found that it's not so much about your hieght as it is personal preference. Sherrills sells a 12 foot piece of technora that you could experiment with because you can lengthen it or shorten it by tying your bends at diff. Lengths. Just don't cut it till you find what works best for you.

One more tid bit; remember practice on a doubled rope, put it through a friction saver so your ropes don't separate at your tie in. Ropes that separate when they cross over the limb you tied in on will tend to spread your hitch and it will cause sliding, and possibly a short fall. I think its called '5 to 1' or something like that.

Ok last one i promise, a throw bag hung at the bottom of the ropes about 8 inches offthe ground will help keep the ropes together and you will get better locks.

Ok i lied, the first time i went up, 4 mins 43 secs but now im consistently around 28 secs. Do it once a day and you'llbe under a minute in no time. In my practice tree the bell is at sixty feet, then when you go to a comp their bell is around 49 feet. I practice that way cause you still have some steam when you get to the bell at the comp.

I think PUClimber hit this one right on the head. Don't spend a bunch of money. Just get a couple feet of a prusik cord. Anything will do...you don't need an expensive cord. Then play around, adjust the knots...then when you know how long you want it to be, have a prusik sling spliced up with a big eye on one end and a little eye on the other.

The way I learned, you want the prussik to be long enough to be just out of reach when you're at full extension. Take 12 or so feet of good 7mm cord, tie it with double fishes like Tom said and adjust until you can't reach it. You'll have to go up one lock to release it after your done but that's normal.

A standard prussik cord is 11 or 12' before it's tied. Tie 2 double fisherman's knots and you can adjust it to a length that works for you.
