Floating anchors

ive seen this done a few times at comps but never felt ive been in a situation that warrants using them. however i have about 70 poplars to get down. i see an ideal opportunity to set a footlock line right at the top and ascend about half way up the trees, switch to a floating anchor and knock the tops out half way up. i bought a omni block yesterday to use, and im really just looking for any pointers

Steve. I'm not sure I understand.

Why can't you just tie in as normal half way up. Floating anchors are really for when you want to work the tree without climbing to the top.

to be honest rupe....id probably normally just spike them. however i want some footlock practice and also want to try out floating anchors. by the way, these and multiple stemmed poplars so they do need to be worked a little

thanks mahk. on average id say the trees have 5-6 stems to knock out. theres a 10ft deep ditch one side of the trees, fortunately for the most part the limbs are all leaning the oppostie direction but theres the odd stem going out over the ditch that will need a bit of work

Oh I understand now.

If your planning on getting a throwline in the top then I'm guessing they are about 40foot tall??? :)

Did you see Beddes' climb at Guildford, you could try that method of floating anchor/crotch. It seasily removalable with out going back to it and requires little amount of gear.

haha you're such a wanker lol

actually they are more like 30ft /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

and at guildford about all i saw was the back of a 3 year old as i spent the whole day chasing after him unfortunately. i really missed out on a lot that day!

Yeah I know.

I'm sure you'll get your line ok. Theres 70 of them so it might not be the one your aiming for but you can pretend it is.

Not sure if I can explain Beddes system but will try if you need me to, unless you've already found the info your after.

Do you use kongs? Cos that method is real simple, and footlock strop is even easier.

i have kongs, havent used them since going over to a strop though. my current thinking was to footlock up to wherever i wanted to be, stick a fig8 knot beneath my footlock strop(on the footlock line) then clip the omni block to that and my ddrt setup

That'll work.

Also you could tie a prussik loop around the foot lock strop and attach the ddrt to that. Tie a spike knot in the access line and clip the FL strop into it. With both methods you have to return to it to undo the knot before retrieval.

Beddes method was to tie a butterfly knot in each leg of the access line, clip a krab into each and run the ddrt line through both krabs.(remove the FL strop). No need to return to it for retreival as long as you can pull one or other of the butterfly knots through/over the TIP.

How long have you got for 70 trees....sarcastic comment imminent but I won't!!

that beddes method sounds cool....might give that a try, although for this job i'll need to retrieve the line whilst up the tree still so maybe for another job.

got 10 days on the poplars. dont know for sure if i have the job, someone else is pricing it, i just went to see the job to let him know the duration

true, but the floating anchor point will more than likely be the same point that i'll knock out the final leader, least that was my thinking anyways

I saw Beddes do his trick once in Queenstown and I was amazed that he was able to retrieve the back-up from the ground. I didn't quite follow how he did it though, and I'm not sure about the two krab thing that you mentioned, could you explain once again please? If I remember correctly, when Beddes retrieved the back-up, only one krab descended to earth.
Thanks, Russell.

Check out Mahk's link.

By accessing on SRT, and then clipping a gri-gri and using it for work, its simple to install and retrieve. Nothing fancy/complex required. Just frog up on chest ascender, attach a Gri-gri, get some work done (always tied in twice), then reascend, descend and retrieve. You can also do it DdRT.

If you've got 70 to do Steve, you will certainly increase your profit margin and spare yourself footlocking MSDs this way. /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If you make it to the APF, be sure you and Rupe find me. I'll explain more where we're coming from.

Got to go catch a flight - but I'll be back!
