fixing stihl 026 carburetor

So I have an 026 that ran one day and wouldn't even burb the next. It got spark and has compression so we decided to tear the carb apart and clean it, along with the fuel line. We cleaned every port and every piece 2 times. put the carb back on and nothing. So we decided to replace the diaphrams. We did that and put the carb back on...we tried to start the saw with the air filter still off and we got nothing. After 2 hrs, i said lets put the air filter on and try starting it. We did that and it fired right up with no problem. Was it a fluke or does the air filter have to be in place to get proper air mixture to the carb to even fire a little?

No, it wasn't flooded. We took the spark plug out several times and even let it sit for a while before trying it again which didn't work.

Sounds like a scron piston? They start when cool, but once hot you'll pull till your arm falls off and get nothing. Once it cools again it'll start.

used it all day Saturday and runs better than ever now. Hot or cold, fires nice and easy. Its a great little saw.

I rebulit the carb on a t200 for a friend and had the same problem. after I let it sit over night it fired right up and run great. I think the new dry parts needed time to be wet and expand.

Phil, when I have that problem, I do what you did and if it still didn't start, I have an eye dropper (1 oz.) bottle, cleaned out twice, dried and put in fuel mix, I drop about 10 drops in the carb, with the air filter off and they 95% of the time start back up and run. The 026 seems to be very tempermental. I personally own 2 and run into that situation more with those 2 than any other saw. But, I still use them both. Never use any saw with the air filter off.
All final carb adjustments should be made with the air filter on.

A bad coil does the exact same thing too!

Really? I'm no master mech by no means. I have a 064 that does that. I can't seem to find a rebiuld kit, I'll try the coil change see if it works.

Hey want to say thank you BB!!

New coil and saw runs great. Good thing I love that old 064 it's like part of the family.

Now to go back and kick the one dealer told me it was a scorn piston in the kid sack.

can u guys please tell me what the coil is, what it does, and where it is located? i have never heard of this before.

it is what creates electronic spark for your machine via magnets on the flywheel. it is located next to the flywheel, under the pull start. it has an armature air gap that must be set correctly for the machine to run correctly
