First-time splice?

Hi all.

I nicked my 200' velocity splice, probably right in the middle (what's new?), so I have to get a new rope

I am thinking about saving some money by plunking down a huge chunkachange on a reel.

I have never spliced before, but want to learn how to. My favorite rope is Velocity, and a close second is Blaze.

My question for all of you splicers is, as a first time splicer, should I tackle a 600' reel of one of these ropes, or am I biting off too much? Are these difficult ropes to learn on? Should i just buy them pre-spliced?

Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks.

um,

I would buy a 120' and splice some lanyards first so if you mess up, you are only messin up a short piece of rope. I climb on and splice velocity. Not so easy to splice if you have never tried, but you gota start somewhere. you will need to do a few before them look nice though. Good luck, use a brian toss wand

I'm with weise. I would take some lessons from someone who knows what they're doing and have them physically walk you through it so you know wht to do.

Just buy 200' of tachyon, and bring it down to Charlotte. I can convince Jeff (altreeist) to splice it for you.

You need to get off of the Velocity, and onto the Tachyon.

I would say there is a 95% chance you can learn to do the blaze/velocity splice on your own. It depends on your patience and determination.

If you do get the rope, I'd also get 40' of 7/16 polyester rigging line or sailing line so you can practice on something that isn't going to fight you much. Blaze and velocity both are tightly woven ropes that cause a bit of fuss for beginners (sometimes). Practice on the easy stuff until you get the rhythm down, then step up to the harder stuff.

We'll talk you through it!

Thanks everybody.
I've been thinking about the Tachyon, I'm going to ask Sherrill/Baileys/whoever I end up ordering from if they have a spliced 200' line of that stuff. Weird, but only Velocity is listed in the major catalogs at 200'with a splice.

I'll probably start practicing on some stuff laying around the shop, order a 200' with a splice, then buy the reel in a couple months. I need the rope right now, the jobs won't wait for me to learn.

Sounds like Velocity/Blaze are not impossible to learn on. Thanks again for your time.
