First Double braid splice using an old piece of Aztec Green

The only splicing I have done is with Samson Treesave for Dynamic Cabling, but I had some time so I figured why not.

I failed on this one before I found the modified used rope instructions from Samson, and I currently only have a Yale Wire Basket Fid from cabling that I used for this splice... Need to get some other tools...

Second try came up with this. I think I could have cut the core closer to "X" and it might have cleaned it up a bit.

Any feedback is appreciated!

It does make it easier when you don't have to do the final bury of the core past the throat. I'm not sure how it compares, strength wise, to the regular double braid splice.
For cosmetics, you could poke the core sticking out back into the rope.

Thanks, I did some extra work there. Yeah unfortunately Samson doesn't mention the strength in these modified instructions, but it's not for use so I'm happy with it as a starting point. I'm hoping using the correct fid or a wand in the future will make it easier to do the full bury to Z(some new rope as well). As I figured would happen, a wire basket carrier for hollow braid didn't go anywhere once the wire entered the throat.

Lots of learning to do before I'll feel like I know what I'm doing

A cheaper option for the wand would be a piece of bent wire with a handle. Or make a splicing needle out of a long screwdriver. Round the blade and put a slot in it with a Dremel tool.
