First attempt...

I found 3 strand to be very frustrating, I know it's simple, but I just can't seem to grasp the sequence. I even tried color coordinating the strands, helped a little, but I was getting lost in the animated tutorial. Anyway, here is my attempt at 3 strand:image.webp image.webpDoes this look semi close to yall?

tRex was so much more fun to splice. Just have to lock stitch it.image.webpHow much more difficult is it to make a whoopie sling? A safe bloc whoopie is next on my list.

Not too bad for first attempt. It looks like you tried to keep the strands round and tight when it's better to be flat like a ribbon. Also the strands should go under at more of a right angle instead of going down the rope.

After you have tucked all three strands once they should be equally distanced and at the same level.

I don't see any small nubs sticking out, what did you do with the ends?

Ahhh, that makes sense. More friction if you leave them flat.

I whipped the ends with some left over strands and cut them close. Wasn't really sure what to do with them.

If you cut the ends too close they might pull through when the eye is loaded, as some stretching does happen. I guess flexing the splice too much might also cause them pop out of the tuck.

When flattening the strand pinch and slide your finger and thumb down but stop before the end or it will unravel. You want to flatten not untwist so tape the strand after flattening.

I have the best results from following Brian Toss's video instructions. It's easier also if you use some type of Swedish fid to separate the strands, again Brian Toss came up with the best fid of this type, the Point Hudson fid. Easy to make it yourself out of pipe and a grinding wheel.

After you asked about the ends the thought of them pulling out popped in my head. Valid point. How long should I leave the ends, and how should I tidy them up? Whip them down with the splice towards the end?

This is the tutorial that I used, found it easier to follow than the video tutorials by marlow and others. I was also using a Toss fid from tree stuff. http://www.animatedknots.com/splice/#ScrollPoint

I was unable to find a tutorial by Brion Toss, I imagine they are only available through DVD?

Brion's instructions are available on DVD. Back when I bought my I got the tape as I only had a vhs player.

He starts the splice different than the one you referenced.

I like to slowly taper the splice by finishing the appropriate number of tucks with all 3, cut 1, then bury 2, cut 1, then bury 1. Melt all the ends, too. Your second attempt does look much better!

I took the last attempt and cut about 2.5 feet off of it, and spliced the other side. Going to hook it up to a MA system and see if I can't break the splices with about 2-3k on it. If my bad splice holds up, I imagine my good splice will be just fine.

My plan for this 3 strand rope is to connect it to a pulley that will hoist my ddrt system into the canopy, allowing for ground lowering similar to a srt set up.
