IMG_20150810_195200216.webp Well I finally gave it a try after seeing all the great work everyone here does. Making a split tail.from Yale XTC. I thought it went well for a first attempt. Will stitch it up tomorrow. Does this look good to you guys ? Thanks for the inspiration to try this. I think I'm hooked !!!

Looks very nice. I'm trying easier stuff, right now. I know 16-strand can be a real bitch, so I thought I'd save that for later when I'm feeling brave.

Looks good. Is that on the first try? The wesspur video has some very subtle techniques that are not mentioned, but are demonstrated that you have to watch closely to pick up that makes the 16 strand splice a bit easier to.complete. Always nice to use gear you have constructed.

That was my first shot at it. I did watch the wesspur video and bought the Brion Toss video too. Watched that about 6 times before I started. Now is double braid easier to splice? That will probably be my next adventure.

All in All jba, you did really good for your first eye, I'm a bit of a perfectionist (OCD), when it comes splicing. I see 2 things that are catching my eye, when you picked your strands they pulled a little bit up into the eye, and what is that little bulge about 5-6 inches from the eye? Did you lay the rope flat and palm roll to smooth out any lumps or bumps? Sorry, I'm not being a prick, I'm just a little OCD.
Keep up the great work! Seriously, you did better than my 1st! [emoji106]

I did not roll the splice. In fact I didn't know to try that. And I learned to climb from a old timer. He used a snap with a tail on three strand. LOL. Just used to having the snap now. But can make another on for use with a biner.

If you splice a tight eye, it's just the cost of the rope. You can also use a captive carabiner, no side loading, but more expensive. I use auto parts store rubber brake line fasteners. They hold a hitchclimber pulley and a E2E prussik, or a 13mm rope eye in place. If you need I can take a picture of them for you to see what I'm talking about.

This is the rubber capture that I keep on my gear and a few extra attached to my harness. You can find them on eBay also.
Best of luck, and Splicing

Hey Bro, did you get and understand the pics I sent you? They sell them at Napa and Auto Zone in a 6/pk. I think I paid $9-10 per pack. They work on just about every biner out there. I hope this helps you.

I did get the pics. Is that a splice you did yourself in the second shot? I like the looks of the clear shrink wrap on there. Looks like another order from tree stuff. Or do you know of a retail outlet for it so as not to have to order it

I do all of my own splices, after whipping and stitching i put 3:1 internal glue heatshrink on all of them. On my climbing ropes I put a label with the size and length under the heatshrink. It makes everything very clean and snag proof. Glad you like them.

OK guys trying to put a tight eye on my rope. Need to pull the tail for the crossover but having trouble getting the fid through past the core. Any suggestions?

Have you pulled the core strands to create a little slack? Before you started your splice did you tie a knot several feet from the core strands removal? Pull the slack from Mark "C" to the knot.
Best of Luck!

Awesome idea! I paid $10~ for the Stein rubber straps (pk of 5) which are cheap crapola as far as i see them. Definitely gonna hit up NAPA soon!

Thanks,

Looks pretty good, but are those black marks that I see on the rope near the eye of the splice? If so, I have a suggestion to avoid that in the future. Instead of a marking pen to make your layout marks on the cover, use a needle and thread. Just put a short piece of thread thru the cover at each layout point, and remove them as you do the splice. That way you end up with no marks showing on the splice.
