MESA, AZ – Several firefighters and three men were attacked by bees in a Mesa neighborhood Tuesday morning.

Three men were cutting down branches from a mature tree at a residence near Brown Road and Center Street.

One man was 10 to 12 feet off the ground and was cutting dead parts off the tree for about 45 minutes before the bees attacked around 9 a.m., according to fire officials.

The bees attacked the man’s face and he was reportedly stung up to 100 times.

A second man on the ground heard the screams and tried to fight off the bees with a hose. He was stung, too.

Firefighters arrived and said the first man was in pain, but showed no signs of respiratory problems or swelling.

Both men were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

"They were aggressive," said Mike Renfro who was the third man working at the scene. “I had to run down the block and they were still chasing me.”

Several firefighters were also stung and were treated at the scene.

A beekeeper was reportedly called to handle the bees and police blocked off the street as firefighters used their hoses to try to bring down the hive.

That happens a lot down there, we have had a few incidents in the company, one a few years back the guy ran about a 1/4 mile. Certainly something that needs to be on the check list before climbing.

Sounds like Africanized Honey Bees. Fire Dept. should be prepared to use foam and fog spray to knock down bees. Haven't used myself, just read about. ONLY this strain of bees is so aggressive as to chase for more than a few hundred feet.
