Fired today!

Had a conversation with Wes Hopper today. He forwarded my email to ISA and they are going to contact my old company to try an get them to participate in there educational programs. He also wanted me to inform everyone that there are still people fighting for proper tree care and practices.

You know if a group of tree guys get together and decide to run a rope around a tree to yank something rather than set a pulley...it may illustrate a lack of knowledge as to how trees function rather than maliciousness or lack of concern regarding the consequences. That goes for topping, spiking, flush cuts, stubs, etc. etc.

Credentials demand knowledge of at least the basics.

As Dr. Phil would say "I get it", the more proper care you can give anything is as Martha would say "a good thing". I also get tree wounding being an effective clearance technique.

The more harsh the treatment, the less of your tax dollars spent. Less taxes requires less money changing hands creating a lower impact on the enviroment resulting in more trees in that area. Just not along the power lines. Maybe your company was enviromentaly friendly.

I bet the cheapest clearance would be to scalp the surface then put livestock that eat saplings along the lines. Even workers with no tools walking along and snapping tops by hand. Just did my section of line like that at -30. The shoots snapped like glass.

Sounds like this situation got some good publicity. Good for you Rbc. I hope you landed one of those jobs.

Quit yesterday, flying home tomorrow. Hoping to get on with one of the local companies or Asplundh. Possibly Lewis if I can deal with not running orange and grey saws haha. I feel good!!!

It's funny where and from who the truth is exposed. I was watching Terry Jones from Monty Python being interviewed. He's written some history books and another following 911 on the subject. He told a tale from prior to the first Gulf War. He was reading Weaponds Today, an insiders magazine for the arms industry. The title was "Thank God for Saddam". The author described how he hoped radical islam would replace communism following perestroika. Those company's stocks did really well following 911.

Doesn't make fertilizing trees seem so bad compared to bombing cities for the purpose of making more bombs. It's starting to look like Iran would be a good market or that pesky bronze birch borer.

Shigo had death threats (I know as I was around him during this period and he disallowed recording for a while) for exposing the folly of tree paint. Hey lots of businesses and families relied on the revenue generated by this product.

Holy cow! Glad I somehow found this thread; that is an amazing story for a product that seems rather mundane. I had no idea he went through all of that.

Tim

I think (know) I made the second statement but I doubt I made the first statement. Not like something I would have stated and I def. would not have mis spelled Weaponds and allowed it to remain that way.

With those quote tags on the ole forum who knows what happened.

Good remembering old Wulkie...he was an interesting fellow.

Yeah, treevet, you were just quoting a previous post in that thread, which I guess I thought would get left behind when I tried to quote your post, but it did not.

Pretty cool that you got to know Mr. Shigo. I've never seen him referred to as "Wulkie" before. Was that a knickname that you had for him, and if so, what does it refer to, if you don't mind my asking?

Thanks in advance for any answers you choose to give.

Tim

I was terminated today because I refused to spike a tree to remove some broken limbs from another tree that struck it. My boss and I got into a pissing contest and I flat out told him "they are my spikes and ill do what I want with them." The broken limbs were about twenty feet up and I told him I would set a line and prune the limbs. He got pissed off and started telling me that I would do what he told me to do. Well some other word got thrown back and forth and when he told me fukc you I told him he can go home and talk to his kids like that but not me. He actually wrote on my seperation papers insubordination for refusing to spkie a tree. I was working for East Coast Right of Way Maintenace. They are a bunch of hacks. My ex boss and I argued a lot about the way he was damaging other trees needlessly. Earlier today he was running a rope around another tree to the gyro trac to drag logs. The tree the rope went around smoked the rope cut into the tree about 3/4 of an inch halfway around this oak. I expressed my opinion about that and his response was who cares. I want to know who I should call to report this. There is too much other stuff that has happened to mention. Can I actually get fired for sticking to my morales? The tree that was spiked was not in our right of way? Should I contact the home owner who has no idea there tree has gaff marks needlessly.

Yeah Tim, What Roger said about Wulkie. He passed a few years ago. I spoke with him on the phone periodically. He started his own forum but I was a little too confrontational to stay on there. He passed a few years ago. Was a great guy.

But yeah I did know Shigo somewhat personally I went to so many seminars from his beginning, not just mine, he knew my first name. Also I bought one of his first pre publication texts and he never forgot that. I bought every text and vid he made. All are signed.

That's really cool treevet

Cool, Dave. I believe I only saw Alex at one conference.....

Was Wulkie's forum the one with that garish green interface? Remember what it was called? In case the wayback machine has a cache of it.....how about the old ISA forum?
