Finishing off HRC ends

Hello all,

I just received a hank HRC from TreeStuff and I wanted to cut it into lengths for friction hitches on my climbing line and lanyard. I noticed when it came to me that the core was exposed on each end of the 10' section for about 1/2". I assume that this is normal due to the construction of the cord.

How do most of you cut and finish off the ends of HRC?
Has anyone used "whip-it" with much sucess?
Would whipping the ends with a very small diameter cord prior to cutting the HRC help?

I know that eventually it will fray and I have to keep close tabs on slippage. I just wanted to get it cheaper and be adjustable instead of eye to eyes.

I normally tape it tightly with electrical tape on either side of where I am going to cut. After I cut it I use waxed whipping twine and put a small whip stitch just behind the tape. That way if the tape falls off it only frays back to the whipping.

Thanks for the pic. Go figure I have the same set-up as you. Orange Tachylon with hitch climber and ultra O's. Did you by chance go to the tree rigging class at Rutgers a couple of weeks ago?

Me too. Pretty good class. Some neat tricks with the hitch climber that I didn't think about.

I have done the same as treebeaver only I put the stitched wipping right on top of the tape about 1/4" shy of the end. It's the best of both worlds!!
BTW: Seems like shrink tube works even better than tape if you have some.

Shrink tube will come off unless its really good stuff with an adhesive on the inside. Best way is to tape before cut, then whip directly on top of tape. Like Tyler said, splice is good too.

Regardless of splice or not, whipping is almost essential to prevent unraveling, best way IMHO.

Guess I was not clear. Whip on top of the shrink tube is what I meant. Then it will not come off. It seems to firm up the cordage better than just tape before whipping.

You may have figured this out but hrc is easily milked. Don't trim it.
