Finally Leaving

Location
Minnesota
Well I am finally leaving for my trip to Thailand! I am going for about 6 weeks. I am going to be doing an internship there. I was suppose to be working at a botanical garden, but that has changed. Now I am going to be working with a government environmental program. I am not sure what specific project(s) they are going to have me working with, but I am hoping to try to do something with trees. I am going to be in the very North part of Thailand near a city called Chiang Rai.

I will be staying with a family while I am there, so I will be able to really experience their culture. I just found out that the family I am staying with has their own Thai Boxing Ring, hopefully they will give me some lessons, so y'all better watch out when I get back!!

It sounds like I will have internet access at the office I will be working in. So I will hopefully be able to post some pictures. If not I will have to post them all when I get back in Nov.

Have fun, and don't trip over any thai stick!

Mark, your quite right. The only head ache is in finding a toilet (or bathroom if you prefer) every five minutes if you don't have the tablets! Nuff said on that one I think! /forum/images/graemlins/toilet.gif

But I would say that I managed a four hour taxi journey in Thailand with the help of these tablets.

A cork works too, so I hear.

I am here

Hey everyone I have found a little free time and an internet connection. I have been enjoying my time here in Thailand. What I have been doing here is learning all about the different natural resources here. I am staying in the provinence of Phayao, in Northern Thailnand. I spent a week around the city of Phayao and learning about the fisheries and lake here.

I just spent a week at Phu Sang National Park. This was an amazing place. They have a waterfall there that stays about 30 degrees C all year round. The stream is heated by hot springs right before the waterfall, so the water is really warm, just like taking a hot shower.

There isnt much for tree care here. I have seen one chainsaw, but it was being used for wood carving. It is a poor area. At first not many understood the concept of Urban Forestry, they thought it was just designing parks, but I think they understand now.

Next week I am going to the local universtiy to talk to some forestry students about urban forestry and arboriculture. The govenor of the province has asked me to help with reconstructing to be able to grow trees in the area. There are trees now, but all of them are dying. They are all planted in small 1ft x 1ft cutouts.

I will have to wait to put pictures on here until I get back to the states. It good to be back on the Buzz
