Fimbl saver

I have had both lengths, very well made and solid. Will take a beating. I gave them to one of my climbers who liked them. I found them heavy and prefer a home spliced ring/ring with DMM 34mm/26mm rings. Now I climb mostly SRT, so use a ring/ring with a top tie occasionally. Tuefleberger makes good products.

Very nice product, it has steel rings or thimbles rather which I would rather have in a fs. Nice and compact and not too heavy. I actually sold a rope guide because I always seem to reach for the fimblsaver instead, much less hassle to set up. The friction on the stainless feels right about in between aluminum rings and the cocoon pulley. Only bad thing is it can be a pain to set from the ground using larger diameter climb lines as they tend to jam against the tab but with a little work they seem to go through.

One way to solve this issue is to create a non-life support eye on one end of your climbing line. If you remove about a foot of core, you can make a locked brummel splice with the jacket alone. You can get fancy and create a tapered cross over, but it's totally unnecessary.Tie your throwline into the eye and that splice will sneak through about anything. Just remember not to use it for life support.

I bought one after reading treffelburgers claim of efficiancy being very close to the pulleysaver. This is bullshit the friction is worse than an alloy ring and ring. Used it for a week and went back to the rope guide. Not impressed

I agree with Sirnick … the friction is OK, but not great.

I think its best feature is small size/light weight. Unbeatable on that.

I built a knock off with a retrieval tail to use with a DEDA climbing lanyard. Small, unobstrusive, fine for short climbs on the lanyard. The tail lets me set it without a throw line and get it back without a ball.

I have one, it's great, it never get's stuck, and when you need to be in and out of a tree it's great because it never gets stuck. My point is, after nearly a year using it, when I don't want my crap stuck (treestipation?) it comes out to play. If I don't care if my stuff get's stuck I use other stuff. Which, to be fair, is often.

Sorry for the rookie questions, but:

1 - Unless I am mistaken, there is no way to tie a locked Brummel around the above thimble, correct ?

2 - Can someone explain why a Brummel splice is not considered a good eye splice for life support ?

3 - Would burying an extra long tail into the core make this a stronger splice ? Maybe 3 fid lengths ?

Thanks.

NO, you can do a locked brummel.

In this scenario the core is removed, so a good assessment of the cover is required.

Yes, BUT its still cover dependant.

I've got the 6 footer which I have been using for about two months now. Being the 3rd friction device I have used I like it the best. I bought the pulleysaver first which seems great in theory but I have gotten it stuck upon retrieval more times than I could count. My second one was the sterling rope adjustable from treestuff, which worked well/retrieved well. But seeing as I use my fs alot when tying into a spar (mostly crane-work) I found that it was a little short on bigger diameter trees. (And I really like the way Tuefleberger designs their devices) I really had my eye on the multisaver and would have purchased it if treestuff were able to carry them. I guess due to some legalities concerning patents they cannot sell them. If anyone knows where I can get one from in the US, or if anyone wants to get rid of theirs lemme know!.

Back to the topic at hand I have been using my fimblesaver enough now to have a solid opinion, two thumbs up. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived at how it was built, with a length of Sirius cord doubled, loop over the large thimble and then wrapped with the white/green cover they traditionally use. This design creates a broader sling, almost strap-like, rectangular instead of round. The steel thimbles are great friction is not noticeably different then a standard ring-ring. I tend to worry less when retrieving from the ground that it will get damaged on its way down. I also am very satisfied with the retrieval success rate which so far has been 100% thus far. Haven't been stuck once. Also I am currently using Samson Vortex line, which has a larger diameter @ 1/2 inch and I've found when I retrieve remotely the tight eye splice won't make it through the small thimble far enough even to catch on the retrieval ball, which leads me to believe I'd be able to get it down without the ball. (Although I haven't had the courage to test this theory in day to day work, which would certainly be the time it passes through leaving my fs up top.)

Over all I am very pleased with this device and would recommend it to anyone interested in it.

My guys forget my gear at the shop the other day . So I had to borrow stuff from one of the trainees who has a fimbl saver. I actually forgot I was even using it so it must of been pretty good.

@ tommyh

I make anything, the big eye on my pulley saver design is made from heavy duty shrink wrap, and moulded to the curve.

I cover postage on an international standard of $5.50 (approx)

You will not be paying import taxes or other tax, so it could be a bargain for you.

I like it ... but think I will start climbing on a pulley soon, less wear and tear on the ol' bod :) Personally I think it has less friction than rings but maybe that's just a body type difference. I feel better about bombing it out of trees than the rings for some reason. I hope you like it!
