Feeding your crews?

not sure if this has been said but, if i provided a fridge full of food for clients i would put up a donation box. it would help pass most of the expenses around instead of one sole provider. just my thoughts.

I have my wife to thank for making sure my lunch is in order. If it wasn't for her I would come to work with a half assed lunch with things missing. Best woman ever.

We are about 2 months in now on this little experiment. I also worry about the entitlement thing, but it seems to be worth it so far. Before I started this, I did expect the guys to bring their lunch, but sometimes there would be fast food wrappers in the trucks, etc. Sometimes they would stop in to fuel the trucks, or to take a dump mid-day, especially on the days when nobody packed a good lunch. My crew is definitely deserving of the small daily bonus of lunches, and they don't bitch at me when they run out of bread or lunchmeat, it is usually a friendly reminder. I have found that I am probably going to have to post rules on using this perk:

this food is for your lunch, pack only what you need for the day, do not be wasteful. this food is not for you to have breakfast when you show up, or take a snack for the road when you leave at the end of the day. Please wash your hands before you stick them into the bread bag, lunchmeat, or cheese packages.

I'll let you know how it goes from here!

kellyp, that is a sexist comment!! and im suprised at you!lol
All joking aside it seems like these dudes mothers must have spoiled them. When I was a bachelor,i cooked ,cleaned ,did my own laundry and packed my own luch, and shopped for my food. These guys on your crew are weak!!sorry!!

Sean we have joked about getting a Espresso machine hooked up to the truck with a RV awning to boot. Fold out lawn chairs and table. Nothin like espresso and chainsaws!

Noel-

I think it is a great idea. I have talked with my boss about that same idea for our crews. What I discussed with my boss was what it would take to have a crew that could comfortably and consistently work long hours like four ten hour shifts instead of five eights. I think having some food provided would be very helpful or essential for making that possible. Most of my coworkers don't eat breakfast, usually just smoke a few cigarettes and eat junk food for lunch, and by the end of the day are totally burned out. I eat a hearty 2000 calorie breakfast, bring a good lunch, drink emergen-c or other electrolytes with every quart of water I drink, and go home feeling really good. I view my job as something I want to do though and not as a job and I view myself as a professional athelete, and not just an employee.

I like coming to work prepared to face the day by having my food needs met, having my climbing equipment in good shape and organinized, and being rested and mentally prepared for the day. Most tree service employees I have worked with don't seem to think like that.

Another crazy idea would be for one of the safety meetings to have a dietitian come in and meet with the whole crew. Some things that could be discussed are why proper meals are so important, what eating junk food does to energy levels through the day, and some food ideas for hard working people. That might make them understand why you are trying to get them to eat better instead of them just seeing it as a handout or an expected perk.

Hey Ryan, I think your attitude is GREAT toward your body ,preperation ,and your work!! I would also support the idea of a nutrition person coming in to talk to the crew,as a way of connecting w the team etc.it is an innovative idea. That I would do in a second. My agreement stops there!!sorry! I think it is WAY out there for the work place to feed the work force. What happens if the biz grows to 10,20 50 employees? still a good idea? 2 fridges.Who preps the meals ? when? My wife works in a Hospital, they get to eat in the cafeteria..........not for free. This is only my opinion..........i flat out do not like it.sorry. the boss is your boss ,not your daddy. It is part of adulthood to be responsible for such things!!

just to keep the sexist comments coming..the guys i hire to work with me are strong, extremely capable, and cool with a woman giving out the job description, but they could use a little, what i like to call..."civilizing". like when they catch a little branch in the face and open up a cut on their forehead (not that they are not wearing helmets!) and leave it like they are a hockey star...not a good look.
i need more of them cookin and launderin and shoppin types maybe...
but, seriously, i do like the pro athlete attitude, because i like to see people caring about themselves. and if someone doesn't feel well, i want to know, because people are more important than the job. the job can just about always wait...
live to prune another day

Hey just for the record,I have had a women on my crew for a really long time.
also its not like im "metro" or somethin.....God forbid!!! Ya just need to be self reliant is all im sayin, and do what ever it takes to get it it done.I hate to say it but im w your fellas on the injury thing.......lick the blood off and get back to work.or maybe some tape? Guys are supposed to be a little extra hairy and tough, are they not?and maybe smelly to,at least thats what my wife tells me especially after doing an Oak or something!!

Duck tape is indispensable, electrical tape works too in a pinch.

kellyp....Welcome to the Buzz. Big move from CA to ME. Maine is a beautiful state, I'm a little jealous.

My typical 2000 calorie breakfast is 2 bagel sandwhiches that I make that have sausage, egg, and butter in them. Then to make sure I don't get the munchies I top it off some fruit.

What would happen if we had to work 20 plus miles from civilation ??? I don't have a problem with a steak and some crown now and again for the crew. Theres plenty of coin to go around, unless we are workin' to cheap or being a tightwad. I myself like to invest in people.

Paul, I was just inputtin on the subjuct of bieng prepared/ We all get a little softer as time goes on. When I work as a employee I got no worries/ I make the boss money hand over fist. So if I need somthin its thier/ I come from the school that I treat ones gear as it was mine. I just have never cared for cheap ***ts. I'm carefull how I spend my coin also. I know this may piss off some/ But years ago I broke in a nephew/ Asked him, you wanna be the toughest or the best ???. I got the arborist study guide in the mail the other day, alot words I've never heard of in thier. Thiers two sides to this work and sometimes ya gotta pony up. I have been given many many meals when workin' for others, so I just try passin it along when I'm runnin' a show. alot may think i'm Fred Flinstone But together maybe I can become certified. Thanx Allen
