Feed motor fell off chipper today

We had the exact thing happen on our m15r a few years ago. We no longer have the machine, but I do recall that the entire lower the feed wheel was replaced. This occurred while the machine was still under warranty and everything thing was covered.

That sounds expensive!!

Royce, go back to the very first post in this thread. Your break looks very similar to mine. BzRman is correct, the outer portion of your shaft looks corroded, as though the crack has been forming for a while, whereas mine was a fresh break all the way through. Mine was a 2012 machine with 900 hours, compared to your 2010 with 1000 hours. However, that shouldn't make a difference in my opinion. Print out this thread, including the color photos. Take it to the dealer and show them. Morbark (corporate) covered the parts for us, including new bearings, and we just paid shipping and labor. Have your dealer call ours, Newtown Power Equipment if they need info.
The bottom feed wheel is constructed around that shaft, so yes, the entire thing should be a replacement. Unless you go BzRman's route and try to have it welded, but it's broken off so close to the bearings that the entire feed wheel will need to be removed from the machine before welding is attempted, and if you're going to that much effort…

Ha Royce, not my cup of tea. I usually offer my wife all money saved if she will return an item, take someone to task etc.

Nick from Wi had a Morbark issue early in his new chipper warrantee period, dealer was not addressing it properly etc. He posted about it on another forum and a member there offered to and called Morbark corp. They apologized, got a different dealer on it and paid all costs. But it was that guy that happily called Morbark that made the difference. And he said he liked doing that kind of thing. (The right personality for the job.)

Merle made me think. If you're not getting satisfaction, go through this thread and make a list of how many people mention breaks. Contact them all and compile a list of machine models, years, etc. and Morbark's response to each situation. Then present that list to Morbark and say "You clearly have a QA/QC problem. I want my machine fixed."

For what it is worth, you can replace the shaft, it just requires cutting it out of the old feedwheel. We do it all of the time here. We even stock the shafts and the complete feedwheel just for these occasions. Morbark has used this design a long time on the 15 and 18 so we've seen plenty of them!

So, I got our lower feed roller fixed. It was taking too much time trying to deal with corporate. Plus, I had bought it as a private sale. It cost us 2100 to replace the feed roller and put in all new bearings.
I will say, we have had this machine on a large job and it is a BEAST! I am amazed at what goes through this machine. It will just crush branches and crotches. I have never enjoyed chipping pine tops as much as I have lately with this chipper.
@Jeff, when you replace or flip the blades do you know what you tork( not twerk) then down to?

You don't want to see me twerk Jonathan, unless you feel like puking.
As for torquing blade bolts, I hate to admit it, but I just put a 3' cheater pipe on the breaker bar and socket and snug them up. I know it's not correct, but I've done it that way for years at a number of different tree companies and never had a problem.

That is what I have also done. I will use the same method on this machine as well. Yeah, I really don't feel like puking, so alls good:)
Oh, we love the M15R so far. Really is built for what we need. I have been feeding it with the log truck the last few days. We are processing about 45-60 yards a day and it's only possible because of how fast this Morbark chews through trees. I like how it just brakes limbs off. Now, we are chipping pine!! We will see how it fairs with some hard wood in a few weeks.

Did morbark offer up a chipper while yours was broken?
I couldn't understand what the groundies meant: the bottom feed wheel hydraulic motor fell off. Huh? This is a Morbark M15R, and the motor bolts to the feed wheel shaft (not the chipper frame) and then just slips over a post on the chipper frame to hold it stationary while it turns the feed wheel. Anyway, the 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" solid steel shaft that runs thru the feed wheel sheared off, outside the bearing that holds the feed wheel in place. Nothing hit it, there's never been any issues with it, and neither end of the broken shaft shows any rust from a previous crack. It was just laying on the ground, hoses still attached, turning away at nothing. We lashed it to the chipper frame and finished the day without any huge issues, just harder feeding. Any ideas??

:risas: Oh, that's rich! You're a funny guy! :risas: Offer up a chipper, yeah, right.

Our dealer (and the only Morbark dealer in CT) sucks sweaty donkey balls, so no, no loaner. There is definitely the possibility that if we had a better dealer, they could have pushed corporate into covering more of the repair bill, or giving us a loaner, but I'm guessing our local ass-hats didn't even try.

We've tried using dealers out of state, but no luck. It turns out they're very protective of their territory, and as soon as a dealer in another state hears where we're calling from, they won't do business with us and tell us we must use our local dealer.

We have a lot of new, used, and rebuilt parts and we ship all over Jeff. Let me take a crack at whatever you need next!
