Famous tree destroyed by vandals

I wonder if they will put the effort into cloning it. Do they stump sprout well? I don’t have enough of a baseline with the species.
It’s a damn shame the tree was cut down for sure.

I love what Robert Macfarlane had to say as quoted in the above article:

…the "question now is how do we use that strength of feeling and turn it to the good?".
He said that the "focus shouldn't be on the offender" but on ensuring "greater protection for big, old venerable standard trees".
"The best way to remember the loss of a tree, I would say, is with the gain of a forest.
"Let us see natural forestation take place in the region... let us see a Sycamore Gap forest rise for the loss of a tree."

Great sentiment about moving past the anger and channeling our reaction into positive action. (He’s a great writer btw for those who aren’t familiar with his work.)
I feel strongly that moving past the anger in a positive way involves justice and closure; the arseholes that did this need to pay. They have apparently also arrested an older guy in addition to the 16 year old. An important aspect of punishment is the deterrent value that might make other morons think twice about getting their chuckles by this sort of vandalism. I think anyone who has seen this tree in person up close is going to have trouble moving past anger. It really was remarkable; the photos don't really capture this. This area of the UK is quite sparse and wild, with very few trees at all, let alone one this big. When I hiked beside the ancient wall and over one of the hills that bracket it, and suddenly saw it thru the swirling morning mist fifty years ago, I was amazed at the size and beautiful shape. There was not another tree of any real size anywhere in the area. It was a very stirring sight, one that I have never forgotten. I rested beneath it for several hours as the sun got higher and the feeling was truly magical, timeless. I was not surprised to learn later in the next village that the tree was quite famous for its affect on visitors.

The Canadian forest fire losses are a bit bigger than a guy might think.

"As of September 20, 6,400 fires had burned 175,774 square kilometres (67,867 sq mi; 43,435,000 acres),[2] about 5% of the entire forest area of Canada[7] and more than six times the long-term average of 2.72 million ha (6.7 million acres) for that time of the year.[1] As of September 27, there were 900 wildfires active, and 488 of those were deemed "out of control".[8] International aid has helped reduce the impact of the fires.[9][10]"

Any of you guys on the West coast go see the drive-thru tree at the top end of hwy 101. It's the last one period. All the others have succumbed.

We don’t have many here in Buffalo, ny. We have some but most according to my friend are London plain. Our biggest tree is a sycamore. From 1871. It has maybe a 10’ base. It’s downtown. Pretty cool to see. Always mesmerized by the big monsters.

Often morality has little bearing on legality. Many would say, if it was a male student and female teacher, it's the same, because both are illegal, therefore in their judgement, it's the same. No, nearly infinitely incomparable - reason would conclude.
Yes, we cut down trees (not endangered trees) that we ourselves want to save, from our perspective, not being the home owner, who has lived there for much longer than us.
If we cannot convince them to keep, we have done our duty. It still will be cut down, it's their land, if within reasonable distance from their abode.
This Sycamore felling, is incomparably equatable!

The kid who did this is obviously a punk, who never was disciplined enough in his youth.
His parents never walloped him enough, or ever, for infractions he did before.
He should be walloped publicly, for felling this obviously significant public asset.

It's not about just moving past the anger, it's about controlling the anger, and being reasonable.
There is rightful anger and unreasonable anger, important to differentiate.
If punks learned from this incident, it may save many more precious things of value, in the future.
It's a passive, placative response, to just move past the anger, doing so may have caused this, and will cause such things to occur in the future.

defintely agree on the distinction between legal and moral.. God's law vs Man's law

you lost me on the kid didn't get beat enough though.. firstly, and it's a shame I have to point this out, the 16 year old may be a suspect, but I didn't read anything about him admitting and certainly wasn't convicted.. why are we assuming it's a kid that did this..

secondly... maybe he needed more love and attention.. not more beating...
