family climb

My little cousin is interested in getting into tree climbing and I'm all for taking her out sometime. I know a lot of people have taken kids climbing but have no first hand experience with it and am looking for some advice.

How old do you think a kid should be to start climbing? who to go through for some good beginner equipment for youngsters (new tribe?), Anyone know of any books directed toward kids about rope and saddle climbing?

she just turned 7 a month ago, so I figure I'll wait a few years to get her up in the canopy but wanted to start researching and keep her interest alive.

Hey Liam, haven't seen you here before, so I'll say

Welcome!

Be aware that young kids don't have the hips that hold us in our harnesses better. For rock climbing, where an inversion is more likely, kids get full body harnesses.

Petzl Ouistiti or Singing Rock full bod. Adjustable for small thru big kids. Seven is old enuff for sure, get her in a tree ASAP. Start by hoisting her up with a 3:1, rope tied directly to harness with no 'openable' connecting links. As she gains confidence and interest show her how to use a Blakes Hitch with a footloop.

So use screwlinks for connection points. With the 3:1 system, I figure I'd start by belaying her with me on the ground. I've got a cinch, but am wondering if I would just use a valdotain and rig up a 3:1 system I use for limb walking? so it'd be the same system I climb with, but the working end is attached to her rather than me

Would I be able to rig a 3:1 system where I could be up in the canopy with her, or would a dual climb have to wait until she's on her own system?

I'm going to take her on a small climb first to get her off the ground, then lets head back to that cottonwood on Harriet island, I'll keep you posted
