F350 info

Wondering if you guys think an f350 or any 1 ton would be too small for an arbortec box and pulling a Bandit 90?

I figure the engine from the f350/f450/f550 are the same, so I'm exploring options. I work in a lot of tight areas this is why I'm looking at this type chassis.

Not a truck guy, so any info would be great. F350 are very plentiful in my area as compared to the selection of f550

I have a 97 f350 dump with a mason body and plywood box. Forget turning. Pulling wise you can pull a forestry body if you want. Check into the cab over Mitsi's if you are really worried about turning. The 7.3 diesel is next to bulletproof, and I am happy pulling my 200XP. Next truck will be a cab over.

Don't know much about the cab overs but I have seen a few nice set ups. How are they for longer drives? I service a few towns and seem to put on the miles. Those 7.3 are hard to find but I have heard good stuff about them.

Thanks for you insights.

I service a few towns as well, but I only travel maybe fifty miles a day round trip. I hear the cab overs are not so comfy for travel.

We have both a 550 and a 350, with the 7.3L. The 550 has an arbortech box and will deal with a 15inch chipper easy. Our 350 has only 4 tires, not 6 so it's holding capacity is much lower.

If you are putting on a regular steel chip box on and towing anything, go with the 550, you need the extra support. I think the 350 is too light for a chip box of a decent capacity.

I've got an 87 F-350 4x4 with a ten foot long Arbortech box. Works great and gets in tight areas pulling a Bandit 250xp. Should pull an 90xp even better. Its got the 6.9L International engine, the last year before the 7.3L came out. 157hp of mean, lean pulling machine! LOL!

I've got a '91 F350 7.3 with a 9' steel forestry box, with 2' of tool box in front of that. I also have a '98 bandit 90. I calculated the box to be about 8+ yards full, 10 yards being square capacity. The truck takes it, but the main spring pack is a little inverted, the overloads aren't. You definitely drive slow when it's full. It pulls it no problem. I had amostly full load of logs, and it was the same story. Slow and steady turning... I would go bigger if you can, but it'll work.

I had a 97 350 single wheel, with an ez dumper. Got 7 yard and towed my morbark 10" 2070xl (heavy machine). It got along ok but the truck was geared wrong for pulling. It didnt like the chips and the chipper at the same time. I up graded to a 2011 350 single wheel. 400hp, and it pulls. If you are buying a truck just for work, go duely though. Mine is my personal truck too, so I had to go single.

We had a 350 chip truck at the last company I worked for. It was a little scary driving when fully loaded, especially if there was no chipper. The chipper seemed to keep it stable going down the road. Stopping wasn't an issue. The smaller truck was nice for getting into tight spots.

Good info. It will be a dually for sure when I get it. Soounds like a f450/550 would be a better option just for that little extra weight capacity. Could alway beef the suspension up on a f350 if the right one comes along. Hopefully something good comes up over the winter for the right price.
