eye to eye split tails

This has probably been discussed 100 times, but I need to get a new split tail. I currently climb with a 30in grizzly spliced bee line using the V.T. friction hitch. (grizzly splice doesn't allow for last wrap)

Sometimes after pulling out slack with micro pulley the V.T. loosens up enough that it doesn't grip and I have to tend it a lot.

What are some of your favorite eye in eye rope types and friction hitch combos. Looking for no slipping and fluid movement.

Pics would be great.

Thanks

I have a few different ones that I use, yesterday, I was using some ice on my 1/2 BWR Samson...

It was a combo of fat ice and fat line; my VT would not allow me another wrap and i had to tend it too much.

so I re-tied with a schwabish

Problem solved, it moved very smooth, yet gripped right away without me tending it once!

I use a VT most of the time, but I like a handspliced tight eye more than the grizzly, too bulky IMO.
Actually, I ALWAYS use a VT on my 11mm lines.

The KEY to solving that issue is the right length of prusic, and the proper # and type of wraps. You might try using a knotted prusic cord for a little while to experiment with the effects of different lengths without having to buy 5 different ones.
The top wraps on a VT are the "grab" part and the bottom crosses are release and smooth.
I currently climb on a 28" knotted (I do have spliced as well) Ice tail with 4 top wraps and 2 crosses on piosion ivy. I'm 175 and this works good. However if one of the top wraps is pulled down to become a 3/3 it will creep a little.
Try all different combinations and see what works for you. Just don't try something new in a tree. Try it on the ground first!

Also pay close attention to how the rope exits your VT and into your hitch climber. If you have it on one side of your VT it will have less friction than the other way and give different reations on the same combo.
Have fun Climb safe!

Yesterday I was climbing on lava with an 8mm beeline VT. I few times my rope would slide right through the hitch like it wasnt even there and when i would put weight on it, it wouldnt catch it. Very scary. I used four wraps and two croses. Anyone have this problem before or know why its doing this? What should I do?

that is the one fallback about the VT, it can be VERY temperamental at times... I have never had a climb on a VT that I didn't have to tend at least a couple of times.

Was the rope or the beeline new?

The rope is about a year old but is still new becuase iv hardley used it. I have a PI thats about 2 years old that I usually use and its always worked on that. I think I might try an 8mm ocean and see how it works.

I use the 8mm beeline with the VT. I have used the hand and grizzly splice, I like the hand better! The only time that I have had an issue is when the cord is new and not broke in yet. I have had yellow jacket, but last fall, I got 150ft. of Lava double spliced, but I dont have many hours on it yet. I no that cords take the heat and melt. But besides that how is a good way of noing when they need replaced?

I've had problems with different frictions hitches sliding from time to time. Ill run the VT for footlocking but, a schwabich NEVER slides! I usally run 33inch ICE schwabich on Flyline. Havent really strayed to far from that setup in the last year or two! I bites hard and releases easy! I dont have a problem leaning out with two hands to do work when using the schwabich, other hitches I tend to try keeping one hand on it, just in case it wants to run a lil! I first used tenex for the eye to eye but ill burn threw one of those in a week, ICE is pretty amazing and way cheaper than the HRC. Just my pair a dime!

This is an interesting way to deal with a dodgy VT...

VT with ring...

Thanks for the link Blinky.
Doesn't it look like the ring could trip the carabiner? The right side photo looks like it could open the gate, or at least try to...

I've just switched back to a VT after about 4 yrs on a Knut. I love the Knut but have found it starts getting unreliable when beeline gets worn in. The E&E will be still fine for other knots just not a Knut. I was finding when I slack-tended the knut it wouldn't grab properly. This was 10mm on 1/2" arbormaster. Now I use a VT with Ice or 8mm beeline on arbormaster and lava and they work great. The only thing about the VT is that little drop/slack with each grab!

30 inch oceans dyneema with tied eyes, tied as a 7 over 1 Michoacan. doesnt matter which line im using, it grabs great, never binds up, releases smooth and consistently (doesnt jump when descending), and after about 20 feet, it self tends. LOVE IT!!! Ive used it on my Tachyon, my 7/16 allgear 16 strand, poison ivy/hivy, bluestreak, xtc fire, etc etc...
