Extracting The Core

Ok, so I normally just use an awl to open a hole large enough in a rope cover to skewer the core to then pull it out.

I was wondering what others were using to extract the core on small tightly woven covers like Ocean Polyester?

I have heard of people using small stainless steel forceps or even needle-nosed pliers. What do you think?

I have like a spike on a handle that was used for leather making and was in my great grandpas tool box or something along those lines. It really isn't all that hard on ocean P just takes a little.

Marlin spikes work nice to get them opened up. Very small fid works nice or like others have said a sail makers needle works also to get it out and started.

Not the ideal tool but I've always used the 1/4" fid even on small stuff like 8mm OP. works fine. Need to get a marlin spike but never done it. the forcepts or pliers would probably distort the core if you're not really careful.

dieselcutter, that's what I was thinking too, and I'm still searching for a real good method to make it easier.

If you are doing 16 strand go to a fabric store and get one of those tools that people use to make latch hook rugs. Remove the little lock lever on it and these make a fine extraction tool.

By plunging it into the core and then fishing it out again it quickly gets some of the core out.

I will show you what I'm talking about at the symposium....remind me and I will show you.
