Excess core tail?

So after a little handsoap and some bending and massaging, I finally got the core bury done on my second double braid splice last night. After smoothing the xover and pulling through the core tail I ended up with about 10" of excess core after smoothing everything out. I cut it off, tapered it and completed the splice and it looks pretty slick.

Now being it's only my second db splice, I wasn't sure if the amount of excess core was correct. I didn't remember having that much extra on my first. I just wanted to make sure this seemed right, as I wasn't sure. Thanks!

I was splicing blue moon following the ne ropes db class 1 instructions.

I've got 5" at least of bury, did a good job hiding the insertion point so can't say for sure now, but I know I've got at least my half fid of bury. Thanks.

Something sounds off. You're saying you did one eye, then when you were all done you milked the rope out and there was 10" of core sticking out the back end of the rope?

Can you post a pic?

Yes, after pulling the core back through and balancing the xover point and smoothing the cover I still had that 10" or so. This was before burying the xover and tightening down the eye. I'll get a pic up in awhile.

To be more clear, I pulled the tapered cover through the core, pulled the core back through the cover, balanced the xover and smoothed the cover. Where the core tail exited, marked that and marked the core at the insertion point. Pulled the core tail back out it's exit point, cut it off at the exit point mark and then tapered the strands after splaying them out. Pulled it back into the cover, smoothed it out then finished by pulling the xover in and tightening down the eye. That help at all?

Alright, I thought you were saying you had 10" left over AFTER the splice was completely done.

So far it sounds like you're on the right track.

Let's see the finished product!

So heres the first one. I felt it came out pretty nice. Its still really stiff behind the eye, the strands are really expanded, seems as though some of the "pro" splices I've gotten from Sherrill/Shelter have a "looser" feeling to them, but dont know whats the norm persay.

This one I followed to instructions, and it says to mark the core at point "D" and point "B" using the NE Ropes splice guide, and then to taper, cut at a 45* about halfway between the two marks, which to me essentially leaves you with just that 3-4" bury of core entirely.

I finished another one in short order Saturday afternoon, and I left the core tail a little longer, and didnt cut the strands off at as steep of an angle. The rope doesnt have as smooth of a taper behind the eye as my first one, and wonder if thats related to the extra inch or so of core, along with having less steep of a taper on the core tail. I got a much better understanding of the splice with completion of my 3rd one. I'm now starting to be able to somewhat visualize the order of things as far as whats going on inside the rope, whereas before I was pretty dumbfounded as to how there was core inside cover, and cover inside core, and how the heck it all made sense!

I already hung off the splice, and took a few 2 foot drops to shock load it a bit. Didnt budge so much as a hair! Very promising. :)

And another.......

I did a weakass lock stitch on it, in addition to the whipping, which I now realize after hammering the needle through with the twine.........nothing is going anywhere. Even tried bending it apart unloaded to see if I could work the bury out, again didnt move.

Nice looking work, Jeff! And I'm really glad you tried the bending experiment (before stitching, I hope?) to see if the bury would work out. If it holds up to that, it is truly bomber. A hollow-braid splice is much more vulnerable.

Just banged out another on some used PI in just about an hour minus stitching! I'm finding my own odd method for pulling the core tail through, which I'm slowly honing and shaving off time with, it involves an old piece of 12g electrical wire, duct tape and walmart brand hand soap :-)

I've played with tenex a bit already, and have seen the fault of unbalanced brummels. Definitley a learning curve with this stuff! My last one might be the best looking yet, except for the fact the rope hank I used is kind of ugly and dirty.
