Examining a harness..

Check all hardwear, D rings, buckles. Load bearing webbing as well as gearloops should be in good condition.
Look (smell) for fuel etc that could have been spilled on it.
Test it out "Low and slow".
Consider replacing it with a newer saddle.
Many manufacturers recommend replacing after 5 yrs "regardless of condition".

If found in MY attic, check for partial consumption by squirrels...

But really, first: Do you know this harnesses' history? Do you know why it was retired in the first place? If not, it may have been through something you'd really rather be aware of.

I have a 10 year old harness that was collecting dust in an attic. What would I check for to determine if it's safe to use or not?

Most manufacturers recommend to discard a harness after 10 years. Call the manufacturer and ask them.

Way to many unknowns and time to trust it with your life!

I replaced the bridge on my cougar about 4 months in because of a small hemorrhage. It probably would have been fine but it is a cheap fix and not worth screwing around with. When I get a funny feeling about gear it is time to replace it. Listen to your instincts. The first thought is usually the best one to go with.
