Dump trailers

I don't use it for brush. Hauling logs. 8x15 15000 gvw trailer. 16' boom

You have a picture? I would love to see the set-up. I am in the market for a truck that cash move wood off of the property. I am not sure I want to buy a log truck. I have looked at the trailers. I was thinking that my bucket truck could haul the log trailer.

Thank you vet. I talked to a fisherman who has one and said they blast the mill scale off before painting.

Makes sense to me Gorman. I don't have the time for that now but mine is pretty new and last one was stolen before needing paint. Both mechanically were superior to Dandy Dump first one I had (stolen also). Beware for ring of dump trailer thieves...not kidding...easy to turn over or fence. I think the locking wheel chock is pretty fool proof but now I am in a far more secure location.

I bought a 16x8 gooseneck, 16,000# GTWR from Texas Pride Trailers in spring of '12. Held up pretty good so far, priced real competitive. Had a PJ before that and was real happy with it. Lasted about 10 years until my guys (monkey see, monkey do) overloaded it one too many times and it had to be retired.

I have had a 14' low-pro PJ dump trailer for 5 years and it has held up well. I am thinking about a larger deckover gooseneck dump trailer to load over the side with a Swinger articulated loader. Anyone hauled a tractor or loader on a deckover dump trailer? I'm guessing the deck height would be too high. Thanks for the advice.

I don't own or use a dump trailer. BUT i will vouch for th PJ brand. I bought a 34'-25,000# hydraulic tail lo pro gooseneck new in 2007. It has been a great trailer. Only bad thing i found is they use some chinese axles standard. I would upgrade to Dexters if you are buying new. Easier to get brake parts for Dexters

Anyone have experience with quality steel and aluminum dump trailers?

Whoa I don't know what the hec all that b.s is.. I may go for this or the suretrac 16 footer

Buy the best quality one you can possibly afford. Dump trailers take a beating. You will want something rugged that can last. Others will have more opinion on what types. But I think a double piston as apposed to one central piston is a good idea. Or, have a scissor style lift. I have found them to be much more stable when dumping. Also, check the gate hinges that they are beefy and well built. Those also take a lot of abuse.

Good points Royce. I like the scissor myself.. I'll tow stumper and mini with it as well and with different track width on the two I need ramps that are movable and easily stowable.

A shameless promotion, but I'm a dealer for Load Trail trailers, made in Sumner, TX. My climber has a 16' gooseneck dump and I have a 30' hydraulic dovetail pintle trailer... Both are very happy with them.

One of the guys who picks up wood from me has a 14 foot load trail dump trailer. It's a lot nicer than the dump trailer I'm running now. They are quality trailers at a reasonable price.

The common things I see here in NY with all our lovely salt is it dosent matter who built it if you run them in the salt they rot common sense right. Usually the guy with a rotten trailer has a rotten truck too where the guys that keep them washed down have nicer stuff longer. Also the tailgates are always beat right to crap I haven't figured out this phenomenon yet as most of the ones I've seen swing compleatly out of the way. So look for a beefy tailgate. Another common issue is lights and hinges ... the lights always seem to be troublesome so look for a quality wiring job. A ground wire from bed to frame goes a long way when the hinges get rusty and the lights go out. look for grease zirks on the hinges It makes sense to have them but most don't for some reason. The annoyance I've found is with the low profile if your dumping chips or mulch whatever they spread the load way out the deck over piles it up better. The deck over is also (commonsense) more of a pain in the arse to load. I was using a 8x12 deck over with 4ft sides last summer you'd be surprised how much tree you can stuff into one without even chipping anything. Chipping is way faster than packing brush by hand. Have you looked at having a dump custom built there not usually much more expensive but all the custom built trailers I've seen are way better quality heaver construction. And better components. Little things lights mounted to the frame wider tires so there gentle on lawns equipment specific storage.... whatever you can think up. Ask the builder they probibally built stuff you never thought.

I know I'm like a broken record with this, but this is the style I'd be looking at if I wanted to haul a mini and a grinder. I'd get it longer, and with two rams, and taller sides, but having that deck for the mini is key.

Of course, it's easy to overload a 18 foot trailer with wood, so I guess you gotta be smart (and plug in that fuzzbuster!)

Another idea is instead of a platform trailer, you could have a regular dump trailer with the front of the trailer's walls removable and installable as a headboard. The downside is you can't dump with the machine in the trailer (well... maybe). The advantage is more capacity when you need it.

Hey, I recognize those drawings Carl. :) Carl is having that trailer built for me.

Avant will load across the front when I want to haul it there, with a smaller load of logs in the back. When I want full trailer capacity for wood, I'll have that.

I notice 20 year old galvanized fishing boat trailers around me that only have a few rusty bolts. Conversely painted trailers in the salt air that have metal rusted through in 8 to 10 years.
